Amp Tech Needed

I have a Laney GH100TI, 100 watt tube amp, I'm using EL34's. The problem I'm having is I turn the amp on let it warm up in stand by. After about a few minutes, I take it off stand by, Then theres a loud hum coming from the speakers and the volume is off. Also at the same time I noticed that the tubes are admitting a blue like flame. Can someone tell me whats going on with it.

Re: Amp Tech Needed

If you need an amp tech, find one and take the amp to him/her...there is almosy no way to diagnose an amp over the internet w/o hearing and seeing it first plus there are no real amp tech here...Bruce Collins from Mission Amps pops in from time to time but if you want to use him (he is one of the best IMO) your best bet is to email him through his web site (www.missionamps.com) and talk wiht him directly however he recent had sholder surgery and is working a little slow right now.

EDIT: I should have read a little better...the blue glow is completely normal and should not be worried about. On the hum like I said it's tought to fingure things like this out when the amp is in front of you muchless over the WWW.

the blue can be normal with some tubes, but I dont usually see that with my amps. How old are they? When were they last changed? How often and how loud do you play?

the tubes may be shot. if you dton take it to a tech the at the least find another matched set of el34 tubes to try out, either new ones or a set you know works.

Yep i put in a set of EL34's and was doing the same thing, But i haven't tried to change the 12AX7's yet

Re: Amp Tech Needed

You know, a lot of guys say the blue is normal but I find it to be a rather negative anomaly. It happened on all of my amps except the DSL401 (EL84s) and my Laney combo (6L6/EL34). My 6505+ and my current Mesa DC5 (both 6L6) did this. I actually notice it whenever the heads are atop of the cab, and when I hit the right note, the amp resonates and emits some odd overtones. I watch the tubes as I play and they glow even more blue as I hit those notes. Most of the time the blue is never there. I dont know what to make of it.

Re: Amp Tech Needed

I just finished changing one of the 12AX7's and for some reason the amps working well again. Maybe its the amps way of telling me to re tube it. Thanks for the replies. All repost if it decides to go for a crap again.
