Ampeg Scrambler

I've read a little bit about this cool vintage pedal and it has a great reputation. I'll probably never own one. If I found one it would probably be too expensive.

I just wanted to ask if any one on the forum ever owned or played through one. Was it, is it really all that? I understand that the Edge used/uses one. Who else? Are there good clones of this pedal? It's described as a combo octave-fuzz pedal.

Thank you.

Re: Ampeg Scrambler

It's funny - I was just about to post the same Question. I'm a big fan of the 70's band Cactus and their guitarist Jim McCarty used the Scrambler to get some unholy (in a good way) tones.

I know there's a reissuie that came out a couple years ago.. I don't know if it's any good. They seem to run in the $150 range. Vintage ones go for $1000 plus. Someone told me that The Edge from U2 is a fan of the Scrambler and has bought up a good number of the vintage ones (hence making them even more rare).. I don't know if this is true.. I was also told that the circuit boards of the vintage ones are incased in some kind of epoxy so they're difficult to reverse-engineer.. again.. this could be BS.

I'd be curious to know if anyone here has played one and if it's cool/worth checking out as well. Furthermore, are the reissues (or any clones) worth checking out.

Re: Ampeg Scrambler

I was going to build one off GGG's site, but it's likely one of those pedals you play through and go "wow this is sick!" and then never use it because it's too out there. I wouldn't drop a lot of cash on a real one.
