Amplitube

Has anyone tried this software? I'm getting the live version with a soundcard I ordered from MF. I went to the website and downloaded the demo, which at the moment sounds terrible.

The vst plug in version sounds better, but not by much and does not run in realtime like the live version. Its applied like an effect in a software program such as cubase etc.


Anyone have any luck with this? Maybe it will sound better when I get my audiophile 2496 installed?

I have amplitube LE, the version that that comes with pro tools. I really don't like it at all. I can get some good overdriven sounds, but any high gain or cleans sound like crap to me.

Yea, exactly. I can get what sounds like a good old fashioned cranked fender overdrive, which is fairly cool in itself, but it isnt exactly what I was hoping for.

Its an "ok" program, i sometimes use it to warm up or slightly change sounds that i recorded with my amp, but its rarely used.

my buddy has it on protools, and he used one of the presets on there to enhance the sound of the bass tracks we recorded, and it did a pretty good job.

personally i wouldn't use it for guitar though, as a substitute for an amp that is.

I don't like it either. I've used it for midi files to get em' to sound a lil' more
real. But no matter how much you tweak it... It's still a midi. :yell:

i've messed with it a little bit and it sounds great if you use in on *non-guitar* sources like drums or keyboards. it can really dirty up a drum machine or software drums pretty well. i agree though on guitars it sounds kind of fake.

I have it on ProTools as well and I don't care for it. The tone is far from to die for and it tends to add quite a bit of latency.

One thing I have noticed about Amplitube as well as Pods and any other recorded/modeled source is that the better/faster your computer is, the better they sound. Amplitube sounds better on my PowerMac than it did on my PC and the difference in tone I get from a 2.x Pod from my old Fostex 16 track to a 1.6gig PC to the PowerMac is staggering.

Even though CDs are still 16 bit, you can hear a big difference in tone when a Pod is recorded onto a 64 bit machine.

I have Amplitube but never use it because I prefer Guitar Rig. However, it's a decent program, although the presets are really awful. You need to tweak the sound a lot. As far as my limited experience goes, doubletracking also helps Amplitube's high gain settings sound more real, if you use two different settings, and pan the tracks.

I tried the copy of amplitube live I got from MF with the new soundcard and there is definately a difference. The live version wasnt even useable with the old card. I havent played with it all that much, but I was able to get some decent high gain sounds in the few minutes I had with it.

the plugin we use in pro tools works pretty good. We wouldn't use it for a live recording or to replace an amp. However it works well if you use a tube preamp before the board as say a scratch track or whatever. That's how we use it. We also use a mac G5 in the studio. I have a solo recorded through amplitube solely, if anyone wants to hear it, let me know.
