Re: AMT M1 + EHX 44Magnum vs JCM900 2500 SL-X
What are we hearing here? Soundboard recordings? Cell phone recordings?
Zoom Q2HD mobile recorder on-a-stick, think of a quite decent stereo microphone with a functional camera.
This is your band? Good job on keeping consistent timing across different gigs
One of the bands. To be honest my timing alone is not really good, I always needed some stable reference signal to play consistently. Consequently, to keep this in secret, I join bands with good drummers only.
With the M1+ EHX44 combination, how much tube feel do you have? Does the 44 overdrive if you crank it, and if so, how is that overdrive by itself/in combination with other things?
The M1 has faster edge than most tube amps and the EHX doesn't have the tube punch/dynamics, still this micro rig is pretty functional and sounds organic. Match made in heaven, as Tone King said. The M1 through a tube power amp sounds exactly like some sort of Marhsall preamp, somewhere between JCM800-JCM900. The EHX has a big role of how this tone is delivered.
I use the EHX exactly the way I used my old Selmer Treble'n'bass during the last century (er...), functionally it is a non-master volume amp. Around halfway it reaches its full volume (it is loud) then it starts cookin'. It lacks dynamics as it is a classD circuit so it irons the signal too much compared to a class A or AB circuit. Also lacks the punch of a tube head that move more air with more bass content (that most sound guys tend to cut anyway). Still, don't think the EHX to be weak, it just has its own , sort of mindfully processed thing. Either, don't suspect as much as from a 100W tube head, if the other guitarist in your band has something like that, it can and most probably will kill your sound. Beware of power marching, 44watts just whisper through 300W cab and scream through a 100w cab. The power supply is twice as big as the amp and is really really sensitive of certain stage lights, occassionally collecting an ample of noise. The EHX is recommended if you are a single guitarist in a band and don't like the idea of weight lifting.
The SL-X head has a much bigger punch because of its linear dynamics. Has a more direct feel and more open sound. It is heavy. Sounds really harsh with 5881 power tubes (hence the bad reputation I guess), with them I don't like it at all. With EL34 tubes it feels smooth, that way it's among the top 5 fav amps I've ever played. It cuts through the mix. Sensitive of stable power (a Furman stabiliser is recommended). Not sensitive of stage lights at all. Recommended for a multi-guitarist band.
