Analog chorus for Andy Summers tone

I'm looking for some new analog chorus that would come close to Andy Summers' tone and it's not a flanger... I've had some cheap digital one and with OD pedal wasn't so close when playing songs like message in a botlle, every breath you take... So I want chorus that nails Summers' tone, but I'm on budget so I am talking about 50-60$... I've been looking at EH Small and Neo clone but don't know if they would come close to his tone.

Boss ce-2 or a ce-3 if you want stereo.
This thread reminds me or reading those little "boss pocket catalogs" back in the 80s
here is an interesting page for the OP taken from the catalog:

Re: Analog chorus for Andy Summers tone

Most of the time Summers actually used an EHX Flanger to get those chorusy sounds.
If you do insist on chorus though, the MXR Analog Chorus is great and gets very close to the CE2 (depending on your settings of course).

Re: Analog chorus for Andy Summers tone

Ibanez CS9 is also a great place to start for those 80's tones.

Re: Analog chorus for Andy Summers tone

Chorus is more "usefull" than flanger... And those MXRs are out of my price range... Exact flanger than Summers was using/is using coasts around 100$ but I'm looking for chorus that will come close and if anyone has any expiriance with those EHX neo/small clones it would be great to hear :).

Re: Analog chorus for Andy Summers tone

Andy used the flanger, just turned down the regeneration for more chorus like sounds, that or turn down the speed on the chorus and up with the depth...that will give you that slightly hollow detuney sound.
He also used alot of dual delay, short and long.

Re: Analog chorus for Andy Summers tone

Decades ago, BBC Television screened a documentary about The Police whilst they recorded their third album, Zenyatta Mondatta, in Monserrat. During this, Summers demonstrated and described his touring pedal board. I recall it being a Pete Cornish construction, employing the guts of several well-known commercial pedal designs.

Re: Analog chorus for Andy Summers tone

Check out the Mooer ElecLady Flanger if you're on a budget. It sounds really good and practically the same as the original with the added benefits of taking up less pedalboard estate and the cost. You can get Police, The Cure and even a bit Van Halenesque type tones if you dial it in right.

I usually buy original out of principle myself and have no objection to spending the extra cash for boutique quality, but the ElecLady has them beat on all fronts for me (size, true bypass and cost). Check youtube for some vids.

Re: Analog chorus for Andy Summers tone

Just a chorus ain't gionna do it.

BAsic Boss CS1, or 2 or whatever, but you GOTTA have the comp as well, and I recommend an overdrive and a delay as well.

Re: Analog chorus for Andy Summers tone

I can 100% promise you that his 'classic' tone was a Flanger, not a Chorus (well, I guess both are sort of hte same idea, both have doubled or chorused guitar signals). If you look for a used one I can't imagine them costing much over 60. Specifically, the Flanger he used was the EHX Deluxe Electric Mistress. Later on he moved to chorus because, as I mentioned, they are very similar effects.

Heres an example, with a much more expensive pedal board, using a boutique clone of the Electric Mistress (far out of either of our price ranges), but again, this is 100% Andy Summers Tone:

When Andy did move to Chorus pedals, he used the classic Boss CE-1, and later the (now extremely famous) CE-2, a pedal which is often seen as the grandaddy of great chorus pedals. Mooer makes a great clone of it called the Ensemble King, listen to his tone at about 2:30 to get an idea of how to get a police tone:

The only weakness with a CE-2 style pedal is that the sound is very one dimensional. It only really does one thing, but I have one more suggestion in your price range that might do the trick:

Another option, similar price range, would be the Xvive V8 Chorus/Vibrato. It's not based off the CE-2, it's kind of it's own thing. I'd argue it's better than the Mooer, if only for the versatility that the Chorus/Vibrato knob brings, so you can use it for AS and a LOT more:

I wouldn't suggest the EHX Chorus pedals for what you are looking for. They are very dark and syrupy, whereas an Andy summers tone requires a lot of brightness and clarity with a slower rate.

The main difference between his Flange era and his Chorus era should be apparent, even through the examples I've posted: Chorus is a much subtler effect. Even at it's wateriest, a flanger is always going to fully colour the tone of your signal, while a chorus is much subtler. I prefer the Flanger for the tonal accuracy, but yet I kept the chorus on my board as I moved on, musically.

Source: I played a set of gigs with a band where we played only Police tunes. I got addicted to time based modulation effects, and spent hours researching how to get his sound 'right'.

Re: Analog chorus for Andy Summers tone

Wouldn't a modeling delay like Line 6's do the trick?

Re: Analog chorus for Andy Summers tone

I saw a NUX pedal on amazon that switched between chorus, flanger, phaser and something else

It was about $50

Re: Analog chorus for Andy Summers tone

When talking about flangers, would be EHX Neo Mistress flanger close to deluxe model which Andy uses? I've never had flanger before because I thought it would be for more exotic stuff while chorus is used in every second song practicly... I want to know if flanger can sound close to normal chorus too because I'm on tight budget here...

Re: Analog chorus for Andy Summers tone

A flanger and a chorus work almost the same way, and they have a lot of tonal overlap. Both of them use a delay circuit to play a second version of your guitar tone, which is then altered. A chorus uses a vibrato circuit and a flanger uses a filter on the effect.

The 'classic' 80's style chorus sound has a low 'rate' and a high depth. On both pedals, this will give you about the same sound, that classic 80s chorus tone, the police sound, the sound of most of David Gilmour's rhythm work and some of his leads. The Flanger, at it's more extreme ranges will give you sounds like the guitar tone from Barracuda, and the Van Halen style 'jet plane taking off' tone, whereas the chorus gets warblier and 'wetter'. That's the word I'd choose to use, the flanger sounds metallic and the chorus sounds wet. The chorus will probably suit you in more settings, so to be honest my final judgement for you is to get the Mooer Chorus Ensemble, it'll do everything you need from the pedal and more, going forward.

Re: Analog chorus for Andy Summers tone

Ensemble King is out of my budget a bit but maybe I'll be able to find it in local store and try it out because I know they've had them a few weeks ago when I was there. And is Neo Mistress very same kind of pedal as Deluxe Elctric one or not? Because it 20$ cheaper than Mooer and if it nails his tone better I would probbably buy one :).

Sadly, the Neo Mistress isn't very good. Only the top end Deluxe Electric Mistress will get you there decently, and the only cheaper clone worth your time is the Mooer Eleclady, which is the same price as the Ensemble King. I would highly suggest checking out EBay or whatever your regional equivalent is, Mooer pedals don't have great resale value so you can probably get one with 20 or 30 dollars off.

Re: Analog chorus for Andy Summers tone

I've just bought new Mooer ElecLady (which I played on in guitar shop on Fender SuperSonic amp and Boss AC) and when I came home and I pluged in some random adapter it makes a lot of noise and it's distorzed, but when I tryed the same AC adapter with my OD pedal it makes no issues so please help or I have to go to shop and exchange it for 30$ more expensive MXR?
