For Christmas I got myself an Analogman Juicer. It's modeled after a Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer which was used in lots of Steely Dan tunes. I'm running my seth lover(neck), Surfer(middle), Surfer(bridge) Deluxe American strat>Juicer>Analogman Comprossor>EH #1 echo>Alesis PicoVerb>Acoustic 200H bass amp.
With the Juicer on I get wailing, sustaining clean blues tones with the Seth, and very neat, jangly rock and country tones with the middle and bridge Ant 2's. I'm floored with the difference that a semi gritty compressor would make to my tone, my Tube screamer has been put away ever since I got the other Dynacomp based Comprossor. True bypass, doesn't suck tone, and it enhances the natural sound of the pickups ridiculously. It takes me from screaming Phish/Elliot Randall/Larry Carlton sounds, to Wes Montgomery with a light tweak of the volume and tone. It has 1 knob for volume and the compression stays in one spot, but the volume on the guitar can change it from subtle to squashed.
I sometimes use both compressors at once to get a violin tone. It almost reminds me of a very smooth 6L6 high gain amp except I'm clean and using a bass amp. I really wish I took this route before I spent so much money on vintage tube amps, reissues, tubes, and overdrive pedals. I can get all the sag, and have an extremely versatile tone without any maintenance for once!
I'm going to see about posting some clips in the next month. I recently got into music school for Jazz performance and I'm getting a crew of some serious players together.
