a store is selling it, the price is 500$
it just says it's a model 4 USA made, i take it that it's the exact one as on the pic.
does anyone have any knowledge about it? i'm thinking of selling my SG and getting a jackson dinky, but i could live withthis one (especially if it's really an old USA charvel) color aint half bad either.
i'm not too fond of HSS setups and i could rout the neck for a fullsized humbucker.. and do something about that open cavity middle (yuck)

but what do you say? would you buy it? i have to backtrack to the source of this add and get to try it out sometime. purchase worthy or no?

Re: and old used USA charvel, please people your opinions

Tough call - I had a friend who had a charvel back in the 80's and he loved it - they were good guitars and the price on this one isn't bad - but it sounds like you already have plans to change fairly significantly so if I were you I'd play it and see if you like it enough to plunk down the 500 for a guitar your are going to modify that much.
Probably not a lot of help am I??

Re: and old used USA charvel, please people your opinions

yea, those are my thoughts exactly.. i'm drawn between it and a jackson dx10d
but seeing this is a USA model (if it is one) and i nkow the neck of the jackson pretty good and it would require no aditional mods to it, i dont know.. it's 100$ more though

i'd seriously have to playtest it

Re: and old used USA charvel, please people your opinions

I don't think that is an American Charvel. The Model 4 was a Japanese import from the mid to late 80's. The neck plate will say:

Charvel
PO Box 2344
Fort Worth
TX 76113
USA

But it isn't American.

They are nice guitars however. I've had a Model 2 since '87

Maybe Zerb will see this thread, he knows a lot more about this than I do.

Re: and old used USA charvel, please people your opinions

I'm not a Jackson/Charvel expert, but the people at the Jackson/Charvel Forum were a big help when I got my '87 Jackson Strat. You might post this there, and see what they have to say. www.jcfonline.com

Re: and old used USA charvel, please people your opinions

thx for the insight guys.. i hope zerb chimes in later

Re: and old used USA charvel, please people your opinions

Yeah, that ain't a USA Charvel. Zerb has stated that the Model 1-7 guitars are all imports.

Re: and old used USA charvel, please people your opinions

ok, so we got that settled.. but the question still remains.. would YOU buy it? =)

and have to let the people know they are advertising it wrong

Re: and old used USA charvel, please people your opinions

$500 is a bit much to pay for a charvel model 4 in my opinion. I got mine for $300 with a kahler pro trem, of course it was marked as a model 3, because acording to their sources, all model 4's had sharkfin inlays on the neck. Try ebay for the old guitar logo charvels. regardless, they're awesome guitars, arguably as nice as USA Jacksons. THE JCF is a great place to get info on jacksons and charvels. Zerb could tell you a lot more about 'em. speaking of zerb...

The original MIJ charvels are nice guitars, but nothing to break the bank over. Kramer used to stamp their address on the neckplates of imported guitars, too. Cheap way of fooling the less than thorough consumer.

Sorry dudes, almost missed this one....

As I seem to have inadvertantly taught others (not MY fault that you guys listen to me :D:D): MIJ, no usa Model or 250-750 series guitars exist, there are no prototypes because the prototypes are original USA Jackson production axes ;)

does anyone have any knowledge about it?

Yes. They were built between ´86 and ´89 by Chin Su Gakki (aka. Jackson Japan). Rosewood fretboard, poplar or alder body, most have MOP Sharkfins, but some (rare, but not valuable) examples have dots.

Electronics were 2x Jackson J-100 Single Coil and 1x J-50 humbucker, some had 5 way switches but most had mini-toggles, and all had a Jackson J1500 Mid-Boost Preamp as factory equipment. Trem was a Kahler 2320 Pro Flat mount in ´86, 87-89 models have the Jackson JT-6 trem (opinions sway apart on these, I personally like them)

Keep the SG and wait fore a better deal ;)

Import or not, don´t even think about that too loud when I´m near ;) :D:D:D:D:D

But a Model 5 is neck-thru anbd has dual Hummies ;)

I still say no. They can be had for as low as 250 dollars, why pay 500 ;)

Cheers :friday:

BTW: You can usually tell if it´s possibly a real USA Charvel or not within the first 2-3 days at the latest. If it´s suddenly gone or there´s a winning bidder of "the _zerb", then you know it was real and kan kick yourself in the ass :fing25: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Sorry, the only current imports I´ve played for more than 5 minutes are the neck-thru ones ;)

what about this one ;) ever played it.. i want it, this color also (the mahagony version) can you send it to me perhaps?
http://www.fender.com/new_repository/jackson/images/SL2H_Soloist_xl.jpg

I love Soloists and dinkys, so "Of course I´ve played an SL-2H"

One of the best performing guitars you can buy, period. Great deal for the money, but still far from cheap (Count on about 1500.- € new)

Wait times on USA Selects tend to be about 3 months unless the dealer has them in stock. Of course I could order one for you from Kevin Easton or Guitar asylum or another J/CF Dealer, but you´d still have to foot the bill for taxes and such, possibly even 2 times with me forwarding it to you (but you could always come by my place , get smashed /totally stoned, and drive back the next day :friday: ). The Mahogany versoin may take a bit longer, though ;)

Re: and old used USA charvel, please people your opinions

you had no idea how good that sounds man.. the thing is.. i'm 2k short ;)

well, if it's not on the wrong side of 2k, it's not THAT bad for an usa built guitar.. the kelly costs over 2k and an usa fender standard costs 1k here, with the standard trem and the fender tex mex pups.. this one has a original floyd and duncans.. so, jackson wins :D

if i ever get that kind of money, you can expect to hear from me about it.

Re: and old used USA charvel, please people your opinions

man.. that is dirt cheap

allthough that doesnt look like the JBJr .. more like the hotrails

well, what can i say... nice man =)

hmm.. question, could you perhaps get something off ebay for me (german ebay) and send it to me, cash on delivery? could that work? i'm in the market for a line 6 guitar port and it costs 150 euro here. i saw a couple for 60 to 90 euros on ebay.. supposedly unused software and in working order.
i asked a friend of mine but he's broke (suits him for getting that 5150II and jackson warrior .. bastard LOL)
