Tone Cat
Hey guys, does anyone know what pickups Angus was using in the early 90's, back when the live album was recorded during the Razors Edge tour? The tone I want from a bridge pickup is very similar to what he had on that live album...clear and articulate, plenty of crunch, strong bass without being too strong (like the C5 was to my ears), good midrange without being too overbearing (like the CC was to my ears), and enough treble to cut through without being too bright. This pickup would be going into a Hamer Studio, which is similar in construction to his SG's, except that the Hamer has a maple cap and I believe the SG's body is all mahogany. I've already decided on an Alnico II Pro for the neck, but I'm not sure about the bridge just yet. I really like the Duncan Blues Trembucker, and I've thought about ordering a standard spaced, standard polepiece version with a nickel cover from the custom shop. Before I pay custom shop prices, does anyone know what Angus was using back then, or what pickup might get me close to that tone? What about the Angus Young pickup from Gibson, anyone tried that? I remember reading an interview with Angus from the early 80's, where he said he used the stock Gibson pickups in his SG's. I'm not sure if he still does that, or if he found something he liked better. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
