The recto setting on the Vox is good. I wouldn't say it's super close to the real thing, but does sound nice.
The Spider II's metal setting is very good too..very "Recto-ish" and IMO better than the Vox (not as grainy or fizzy in the top end). Barring the clean tones, I thought it was the best model on the spider IIs.
The Randall has some SERIOUS gain. The Randall also has the benefit of a mostly closed cabinet which will give ya more low end chunk. And it includes the footswitch.
I'd prolly go Randall from those two choices. But I'd also look into a Peavey Bandit II in the same price range as the Randall. Def good for Metal, and ultimately a little more versatile than the Randall as it has better voicing options, tons of gain (and can do low gain crunch too, which the Randall is hard pressed to accomodate) a "power attentuator", and speaker damping control. 80 watts.
