Another Duncan Custom sh-5 thread

Many people say it's good for classic Rock. Others say it's awesome to play metal.
How good is the custom to play Classsic Rock? Does it sounds good under low/ medium gain from the amp?
The super distortion works well for this kind of sound on my Explorer, but I think it lacks some bite and a little treble. I'm not trying to copy PAF sounds, because I know the Seth's, 59's or pearly gates can do the job, but I enjoy those hard rock tones from the 70's. Can I get the Custom to play this stuff? Thanks a lot

Re: Another Duncan Custom sh-5 thread

I had a SH-5 in my V for about 10 minutes. I found it to aggressive for classic rock & blues IMO. I swiped a A5 magnet from a Epi PuP I had and made it into a C5. Much better now for Classic rock. I have a A3 Magnet on order now I'm gonna try. I'll post my results.:D

Re: Another Duncan Custom sh-5 thread

the custom is quite thick and can be agressive, try the custom custom for a trebly midrange sound or a custom 5 for something different

Re: Another Duncan Custom sh-5 thread

IMO, you can pull off classic rock with one! Roll down your volume knob a bit! When you need more aggression, turn it back up.

Custom is awesome. I absolutely love it.

Re: Another Duncan Custom sh-5 thread

The Custom5 or Custom with a 59 in the neck is a GREAT setup for any heavy gibson type guitar.

Re: Another Duncan Custom sh-5 thread

theodie, that's what I was thinking.. I'm using just a little gain from my amp, more volume and a booster for the solos.

Re: Another Duncan Custom sh-5 thread

It's not perfect for 70s rock but works well like Odie said if you work your volume control. When I was younger and played out with Paula and Explorers w/ SH5/59s, I often set up my normal sound and volume with the guitar volume on 5 or 6 , then would just roll up the vol for leads (and more gain).

Don't forget back then (70s, early 80s)..you didn't have all the bazillions of replacement pups like we do now. Those players played what came in the axe or used Super Distortions :laugh2:

A SH5 is a good all around heavy rock pup for 60s/70s/80s music. It won't handle the "sweeter" side of things like a PAF style, then again, a PAF style won't handle the heavier 80s sounds that well either.

Its all how you set the amp, the pups, and work the controls. I have two very hot ceramic pups in my explorer and I get excellent lower blues-rock gain, 70s type hard rock, 80s type hard rock, cleans and a passable modern metal tone with them.

The bridge spacement from my explorer is larger than normal gibson, so I have to get the TB-5, right? The only difference between sh-5 and tb-5 is the spacement or is the TB's designed to give thicker sounds to floyd rose bridges or it can affect the tone? thanks

All my SH5s were normal spaced. They din' line up on my Explorers. I never had an issue with it. On a lower output pickup I could maybe see where there MIGHT be a problem. And in that case I'd just raise the poles a tad.

But if it makes ya feel better get a TB5...the only diff is the spacing AFAIK. I do not believe they are voiced/wound any different than a normal spaced pup.

Re: Another Duncan Custom sh-5 thread

the Custom will do CLassic Rock fine. but the proverbial unit would be DUncan's Custom5.
