Another isolated bass track

Re: Another isolated bass track

Noice!

Geddy has recounted many times in interviews that one song on Moving Pictures is the Rick and everything else is Fender.

I love all of the human artefacts, especially the timing feel.

Amplifier overdrive is a major contributor to classic Rickenbacker rock bass sounds. Similar levels in drive applied to a Jazz Bass (with its volume controls set to get the honk) yield similar sounds. Geddy's unique fingerstyle attack completes the illusion.

This thread has given me an idea for a poll thread. ;)

Re: Another isolated bass track

I believe Geddy used/uses the jazz with the bridge pickup volume rolled off a tad to bring a more dense midrange and tame the snap a bit. Little chorus here and there, bi amped with some light overdrive and boom.

Re: Another isolated bass track

I was just listening to some of his isolated bass tracks the other day.

Re: Another isolated bass track

There is a TON of compression on there as well. Sounds like an LA2A, or perhaps even an 1176 and LA2A together. A lot of that crunch is from the compressor.

An iconic bass sound, for sure, but it has a lot more parts than just bass and amplifier. I wonder what mic was used? I am going to guess a U67.

There is, of course, the peculiar way in which he attacks the strings with his middle finger.
