Another Nailing Angus Young tone pickup thread

I just got an Sg, and there seems to be two different methods for getting Angus' live tone- which I would like to do.

Prerequisites are the Marshall and Sg. and some kind of moderate boost- like the Dirty Deeds perhaps.

From there you either go [option 1] higher output, like a hot PAF Brobucker, with slightly less balls-to -the Wall cranked Marshall, which is a very practical application, since most of us aren't going to have our amps as loud as AC/DC live.

OR you can go [option 2] stock out PAF'ish , like the degaussed PG bridge and flat out crank the Marshall to 11 .

What I am thinking is having Seymour Duncan custom shop making a Brobucker with a coil tap at around normal PAF range. That way I would have bpthe options

Is this feasible? Good idea?

EDIT- This is the meat and potatos of AC/DC tone { one thing I noticed though, this guy is blocking the breathing vents of his cranked Marshall with the other head on top of it- NOT a good idea, a terrible idea. The heat generated could destroy the amp being used.);

feasible yes but i dont know if its a good idea to throw money after. are you going to dime your marshalls? do you have the correct cabs? a brobucker sounds great in the bridge of a sg for rock and roll

Unless you're doing stage volume, you'll want the pickup to do about half the work and a pedal/boost to do the other half. A large part of anyone's recorded or even live tone is what's hitting the mic (and since you're not hearing Angus in a small club, he's miked), and the signal processing (room-compensating EQ and such), so you're better off with a hot PAF like the Custom series, a boost, and an EQ for tailoring.

A custom/59 or custom/pg hyrbrid would probably do the trick.

Re: Another Nailing Angus Young tone pickup thread

play your guitars and quit buying stuff!!

Re: Another Nailing Angus Young tone pickup thread

Depends on the era of AC/DC too. Early stuff is a stickered T-top......and having played one of those I can see just how accurate it is.

Angus says his secret weapon is the wireless he uses; as I understand it, it adds some compression and a little bit of boost. I think someone is making a pedal version of this...and then a good vintage PAF.

Do you want Angus' tone, or are you after a similar tone at less than concert level volumes?

I reckon you'd be fine with any SG just using Pafs or paf type pickups, an old skool plexi style amp, preferably with a master volume and then one or more greenbacks in a closed back cab. That will get you as close as possible without using the full monster stage rig. You could also use a g12H but those are appreciably louder and more present, meaning you won't be able to push the amp as hard, so i reckon greenback g12M is the way to go. If you are just using one speaker tho, you might need to go for the newer creamback because it can handle more wattage.

Pedals and hot pickups and stuff are cool and all, but they really come from a different era and give a different feel than the kind of gear he used (at least in the classic era of ACDC).

The guy is under the screen name of SoloDallas. Apparently one of the units has found its way to Angus.

Re: Another Nailing Angus Young tone pickup thread

I wanted an Angus guitar so I went with a SG with a Brobucker in the bridge and PG in the neck. I don't have the marshall amp behind it currently but it gives me a very convincing Angus tone.

Man, I'd really like to punch that guy in the video right in the face. Either that or put a Hannibal Lecter mask over his mouth.

Re: Another Nailing Angus Young tone pickup thread

An SG and a Mashall are all that's needed. I have taken 3-4 guitars at a time to the gigs I play with every range of pickup and when your mic'd in a club the pickup makes very little difference. They make a lot of difference in the home jam room but live it don't matter. Because of that I have a range of guitar and stopped chasing little nuances like the fella above said already. I use a Marshall JVM 410H and it slays for every style I play from blues to metal.

I had a Custom 5 in an SG and that was Angus's tone right there.
