Another wiring problem... Strat with HHS

Pierre

Stratologist
Well I'm redoing my 'Strat' with the following pickups:
DiMarzio Fast Track 2 Bridge
SD Coolrails middle
APS1 neck

The DiMarzio will get a 3 way miniswitch to make it series/split/parrallel, and the CR will get a push pull pot to split it. There will be 2 pots only, a 250K for the neck's volume and a 500K for the DiMarzio's volume.
Right now I only have a normal 5 way switch, but I think it should be enough. I'd like that when I'm in the 2nd position, I could split both pickups and keep it hum cancelling. I'm guessing there'd be no hum if both full hums are on, and there's no way I can buck it out if the bridge is wired parrallel, but when both are split I believe it's doable? Also I'd like position 4 to be humcancelling too when the CR is split (as it wouldn't be when the CR is full on).

Thanks for any help guys, I hope this is possible!

Hey Pierre; Me and the little lady are just heading out for our Sunday flea market run, but when I get back, I'll take a look. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Thanks dude! Do you realize that you could get paid for your service? :laugh2: seriously man you're way too kickass, thanks :)

Re: Another wiring problem... Strat with HHS

I know that I probably could, but I never will. Thats partly because there are already folks on this board, including SD themselves, who provide that service. Kent_S is one, for instance. If you need a drawing now, and you want it tested and tweaked, contact them. If you don't mind waiting 'til I'm "in the mood", me or others, (like OctaveDoctor), can fill the bill. :)

Also . . . if your axe goes up in smoke using one of mine, you get a full refund. :D

:laugh2: I'm feeling much better bro hehe ;)
I'll probably just wire it the normal way tomorrow anyway, and tweak which coils I use as hot or split :) I'm in no hurry. Thanks!

Re: Another wiring problem... Strat with HHS

This is the wiring protocol for the Seymour Duncan and DiMarzio pickups in the set up you plan.

Hey! I do charge for my services!

But only folks who can be bothered to drag their arses into my workshop. :D

I'm such an old tart, you guys here don't know how lucky you are getting me for nowt...

Re: Another wiring problem... Strat with HHS

Thanks dude... I have these schematics in the Dan Erlewine book. What I was asking though is which coil to split in which pickups so I can get position 2 with both pickups split humbucking and position 4 with the CR split humbucking too, if possible.

Eh I'd drag my arse in your workshop, you know that, but with the train ticket and all, it's cheaper to do it myself :D But merci beaucoup :)

Re: Another wiring problem... Strat with HHS

That's a hard one to answer without having the pickups in front of me.

Did you see my post a while back on mapping the relative polarity of split pickups?

Re: Another wiring problem... Strat with HHS

Nope I didn't.... I'll look for it, that'd help! Thanks :)

Re: Another wiring problem... Strat with HHS

I'm planning a little illustrated tutorial on it when can get the flash on my Nikon Coolpix working.

Re: Another wiring problem... Strat with HHS

That'd be great dude! Different manufacturers may use different polarities for different coils too.
A couple of theory questions...

If I split the CR the normal way (i.e black to hot), is it the top or bottom coil that's left out? I assume the one towards the neck right? That should mean that if I want a hum cancelling sound in position 2, I'd need to shut off the bridge coil of the bridge pickup right? But if I do this, the bridge pickup would be out of phase with the middle pickup unless it's split.

Hence my problem.

Or else I got everything wrong and all's in fact, good.

I'm not sure; it's to answer questions lie that that i developed the polarity mapping...
