Another wiring thread

A couple of weeks ago I grabbed an 80’s Kramer.
Today I started work on it.
All new electronics and pickups.
Issues:

1) Both pickups work with the tap test but with the toggle in the middle position bridge pickup is still on. And to a lesser extent the neck pickup is also still making noise.

2) bad ground loop somewhere in all positions.

Here are some pics of the wiring I did and also the diagrams I used along with the wiring scheme for the Fokin pickups which incidentally a the same color codes as Gibson.

Thanks in advance for the help!!

Re: Another wiring thread

Might seem like a silly question, but is that mini toggle an on/off/on or on/on/on? I’m talking about the toggle itself, not what your plan is for it. It should be marked on the side.

I only ask because an on/on/on toggle could give you the results you’re getting if it was wired that way.

Another wiring thread

I just went back to the website I bought it from and there’s a possibility that I may have bought the wrong one. They are both identical to one another.

As soon as I have a cup of coffee in me I’ll go double check the switch itself.

Do you see anything else wrong in the wiring that might cause the ground buzzing?

Re: Another wiring thread

Offhand I’m not seeing anything... assuming that the wire headed into the body from the back of the volume pot (top of the pictures) is going to the bridge ground.

Re: Another wiring thread

Yeah, in the second pic of the wiring I tried to capture that view.
The little hole just behind the volume pot is leading to the trem claw cavity.

Re: Another wiring thread

I was under the impression that the switch itself needs to be connected to ground somewhere...
I thought I was wiring all of the hot signal in red and black on ground.
If I did that correctly, I don’t have a ground to the switch....?

Re: Another wiring thread

I doubt that’s the problem. While it certainly wouldn’t hurt anything to have the casing of that switch grounded, I’ve wired up several mini switches without a ground and never gotten a buzz.

Ok....problem #1 solved...it is in fact an on/on/on switch. I must have ordered the wrong one!!

I’ll reorder and try this again next weekend.

Thanks Brian, I’ll let you know how it goes!

Re: Another wiring thread

No, hang on.
An on/on/on switch is what I should have in there no?
It would give both pickups on in the middle position.
I got the right switch!!

Just gotta figure out the ground issue...

Re: Another wiring thread

Oh... okay...

This diagram here made me think that you wanted both pickups OFF in the center position, since that’s what it’s doing.

If you’re planning to use it as a typical 3-way then you need to wire it this way:

Re: Another wiring thread

Yes... AND move whichever pickup is soldered to the bottom right lug over to the bottom LEFT instead.

Re: Another wiring thread

Ok, got it wired like you said.
Switch is working correctly now! Thanks!

I installed the Floyd and when I touch the bridge the ground noise goes away. It also goes away with the volume knob rolled down.
Any ideas for that?

Re: Another wiring thread

I touched a wire from the switch casing to ground but it didn’t help.
I’m going to put this away for today and come back to it tomorrow.
I may need to take it to my Li a shop if I can’t get it.

Thanks for all your help Bri...[emoji4]
