antiquities in 335

I have a 335 with an ebony fingerboard that is on the full/warm side, but has a spank/sizzle on the notes due to the ebony. I play classic rock and blues through a DR Z carmen ghia and a Victoria 20112 (tweed deluxe clone).

I have Gibson 57 classics in there and find them a bit harsh sounding. As you know a 335 is a )*&^ to wire, so I need to get it right the first time.

Would Antiquity humbuckers be a good match for this guitar. I do not want high gain pickups and I prefer a nickel cover for noise. I have heard some sound samples and liked the openness of the Ants the best.

thanks

I would say so man.

It's a wonder why everyone loves those '57 Classics in the 335s, I don't get it. They're muddy as f@*% and overdriven they sound mad cold to me. My 335 has the BB2/BB3 combo, which I think sounds light years better than the '57 Classics. A bit high output, sounds fantastic for punk and classic rock but it can do Wes pretty well also, but the neck can sometimes sound too "strong" for complex chords. I may either put an Antiquity Neck like I got in my Les Paul (IMO the best best humbucker) or just get a degaussed magnet for it so it can have a slightly thinner, not as woofy tone.

The Ant buckers have a great midrange and although it pairs well with Les Pauls, they prolly sound even better in a 335 for more balance. Fantastic pickups - look into the Seth Lovers also if you want the non-aged look and sound, but especially in the neck pickup, I think you want that aged tone. You can always get an antiquity set and put a non degaussed mag in the bridge. Go for the Ants though, you'll like em seeing the kinda music you play and gear you use. Good luck

Lower the height of your 57 classics down until the harshness disappears.

+1. I think the '57's are as good as any Duncan A2 PU. It may be the A2's qualities you're not thrilled with (some guys say they have a "rude" tone). In a warm guitar, I think PU's with A5's are a better bet, like a '59N, JazzN, or DiMarzio PAF. Sharper, crisper highs and a tighter low end.

I've re-wired dozens of 335's and hollowbodies. It's actually pretty easy. A couple invaluable tools:
- a long stiff plastic coated wire or piece of aquarium tubing. Put this thru the potholes, thru the F hole, & gently pull the pots in place.
- a 6" forcept to hold & position the pots in the guitar. Use this to hold the pot stems from the outside, while you put on the nuts & washers.

It takes me about 5 minutes longer to put the electronics back in a 335 versus a solid body.

Also, give an extra 2 or 3" or wire between pots, as you'll need the slack to prevent anything getting pulled tight when going in thru the F hole. Set everything on an old towel on the body of tehguitar, and check it thru an amp before you re-insert it. Then once the pots are in, check it again before you put the knobs on. If you get frustrated, walk away & come back when you're refreshed.
