Hi folks, new to the forum, old to swapping pickups. I just got done installing some Antiquity II Mini's in my Les Paul Studio 50's Tribute Gold Top, phew what a learning experience. I've never had a deluxe or any guitar with minis so had little to go on. Fortunately, the guitar already has a cavity plate that the stock P-90s mounted to that also has properly placed holes for the MHBs. You have to drill a hole under one side to allow the machine screw to clear. So I ran into some trouble. First, the neck pickup would NOT turn no matter how much I horsed the screws. Ultimately, I had to unsolder and remove the nuts, redrill the plastic ring and pickup tabs, re-install and resolder the nut back on. The bridge pickup went in fine.
Second, the Studio 50's tribute neck pickup cavity isn't deep enough to provide ample room. With the pickup tabs buried I *just* clear the pickup with the strings. I imagine if someone really digs super low action there would be some modifications in their future. But anyway, they're in and sounding fabulous. The Goldtop Deluxe I've always wanted.
So...my questions are, did the original Les Paul Deluxes have this cavity plate and was that the way these pickups were mounted?
Also, were 500K pots typically used all the way around with minis? I left my stock pots which are 300K volume, 500K tone and am glad I did. I don't think I'd want any brighter.
Lastly, has anyone encountered the clearance issue and what has been your solution for it?
Thanks, and sorry for such a long first post.
