Antiquity jazz bass bridge pickup

I have a regular, not II, Antiquity jazz bass bridge pickup on the way. What do you recommend for a growly & punchy neck pickup?

I'm not totally sure that the Antiquity will give me punch and growl, so if it doesn't work I'll try something else. But for now I'll give it a shot.

Thanks!

never tried the ant jazz bass pups but the ant II ones are ****in sweet! like a great old pup out of a 60's jazz

Yeah, I find LOTS of advice and reviews on the Antiquity II. It's almost as if nobody uses the Antiquity.

Re: Antiquity jazz bass bridge pickup

In my opinion, much of the "growl" comes from the bridge position pickup and how the two pickups are blended via the volume controls.

The neck position pickup of a good Jazz Bass possesses a fuller, smoother sound with more low end than you would expect from a narrow single coil. The deep thudding tone on "Whole Lotta Love" is Jazz Bass neck pickup.

Ooh! Whole Lotta Love is jazz bass neck pickup? Mmm...that's a tasty tone. Will an Antiquity neck model get me that, or will it be to soft/spongy with its alnico 2 magnets?

Yeah, I find LOTS of advice and reviews on the Antiquity II. It's almost as if nobody uses the Antiquity.

People shy away from the original Antiquities with rod magnets (Strat, Tele, bass) because they think A2 cannot sound right.

That's nonsense in boutique pickups. Once the builder messes with the magnets the strict categorization of A2 versus A5 goes out the window. My favorite example is the Antiquity 1 for Precision bass which is brighter and more transparent than the SPB-1, although their Alnico rating says it should be the other way round.

But there is no convincing people. The only excuse is that in the Strat segment, the most popular presumably, the Ant2/A5 is very bright and almost thin, so I can see how old views are reinforced.

Thanks, uOpt! Maybe I'll just grab an Antiquity neck pickup and give it a shot. The worst that can happen is I don't exactly dig it. Then I set it aside to try it another day when my tastes change, or I sell it to someone else who will enjoy it.
