I got some antiquity p90s for my '54 LP reissue and had to grind off the edges of the baseplate so they'd fit in the routes. I noticed when I took the plates off the pickups that the magnets for the neck and bridge pickups were positioned differently.
I ended up putting the neck pup in the bridge position (thus turning it around so the wire output wire would align with the bridge pickup route) and thought that the bass notes were dominating the bridge sound.
I took the two pups apart again and arranged the magnets of the neck pickup (now in the bridge pos) so that they were like the bridge pickup was originally. I arranged the bridge pickup (now in the neck pos) magnets so that they were like the neck pickup was originally. Now it all sounds good.
Is the sound difference just in my head? Or does the extra/less magnet pull from different positioning affect tone? Is the magnet positioning accidental? Or does SD have a reason for everything?
