Antiquity Surfer Question

I have what I hope is a simple question. I could not find a definite answer anywhere. Are the Surfers based on an early or late 60's Strat tone? The little paper that came with them just says 60's. The more I research it seems that Start pickups differ from early to late 60's.

Early 60's. Late 60's are either the custom shop Psychedelic Strat set or Fender CS '69s.

+1

Early to mid Sixties. The surf music craze was over by the time that Hendrix returned to the USA.

Re: Antiquity Surfer Question

Loosely based you could say.......they are more thick and beefy than typical strat pickups of that era, and any clones of pickups from other winders who go for 60's tones.

Not that this is a bad thing, but as long as you know they are a slightly less 'pure vintage' vibe.

Re: Antiquity Surfer Question

Early 60s. Early 60's strats are usually a little meatier than 50's, mid 60's, and especialy late 60's strats. Some think that adoption of the rosewood slab board was a factor, and it certainly is, but the mid and late 60s also usually had rosewood , albeit thinner, finger boads. The early 60s pickups had a lil more too.

the surfers are pretty vintage sounding. compared to a '62 strat that my friend has, they aren't much different

Re: Antiquity Surfer Question

I haven't played a bunch of of actual vintage Strats, so my experience is based on their reissue sets. The Surfers don't sound like any of the reissues I've tried though. The Surfers are darker, have a wider dynamic range, and softer, piano felt-hammer attack, where as all the Fender reissues a brighter and snappier on the attack, as well as lower output overall. They come closest to the Fat 50's, but the Fat 50's sound somewhat more compressed. I think of the Surfers as being more soulful and nuanced pickups, and not especially good for surf music, ironically.

Here are some sound clips I recorded of the Surfers and a couple Fender sets:

Antiquity II Surfers

Fender Pure Vintage '59

Fender CS '69
