Antiquity Texas hots not quacking w mim bridge pup.

Hey all,
Picked up some old Texas hot singles, both neck position I’m guessing..(north poles up) on both and measure close to each other. Been using them in the neck and middle positions, along with the stock mim ceramic bridge pickup. Position two has next to zero quack. Why would this be?
When all stock ceramics are in it quacks much more noticeably. Ceramic Bridge is north poles up too.
I have been wanting to get the Texas hot (hot) bridge eventually, but wonder how it’s position two outcome would be.
In the mean time I went back to the ssl-1 I had laying around in the neck with stock ceramics in middle and bridge.
Might try a Texas hot in bridge with ceramic middle and ssl1 in neck. Anyone tried that?

alnico 2 pups dont quack the same as alnico 5, its a different sound for sure. id put the ssl1 in the middle if you want quack

I find that position 4 still sounded good though, with the neck + middle ant Texas hots. I may try the ssl1 in the middle like you suggest for the meantime. But I do think I want to try something else yet.
I’m curious what your suggestion is for a 64-65’ Strat tone - pickup wise?
I’m Leary of the surfers as I feel from what I’ve read, they’re similar to the ssl-1s (both formvar, a5, similar dc). Which are suppose to be a 50s style.
Of The strats that ive heard on videos, they all happen to be 64. Which I know to be a transitional year and hard to determine.
John Mayer, Keith urban, Pete thorn, and Travis feasters all have strats that sound right to me. All greater players too. Hard to know if they’re enamel or formvar.

This is the Strat sound I want ha. I’m told by one of the band members that it is the 64 pups in there at that point.

basically surfers are early 60's type strat pups and they are great at that. if you want mid-late 60's, you want fender 69's or duncan psychedelic strat or something along those lines. pe wire and less turns.

if you like the way the neck/middle sounds, try flipping the neck to the bridge and seeing how you like the middle/bridge with the two texas hots

Thanks again. I’ll try the flip and see like you mentioned.
If I could pick your brain a little more, wondering what era(early/late)/style pickups(formvar/enamel) you’d peg the 64 pickups in the video I linked, and in Mayer’s 64? What would you take for that application? If early I’ll maybe stick with ssl-1/surfers, if later I’ve liked what I hear out of the psychedelic set on YouTube. Im afriad the 69s will be too low output of volume for me.
Those are the styles I use mostly play when using my Strat, as well as worship when I don’t take my Tele.

mid '64 is when they transitioned from formvar to pe and the turns per pup dropped by a few hundred. maybe 8300 on average to 7900 or something like that. There was still a fair amount of variation in my understanding.

as far as the video or mayers strat... really hard to say. im sure i could get really close to that tone with a set of ssl1

Position 2 in an ssl5/ssl1/ssl1 still quack?
Did some more research. Really leaning towards the surfers now. I feel like they’re the middle ground of the ssl-1 and Texas hots. Would you say that’s accurate? I find the ssl-1 a tad too chimey at times.

the surfers are a bit less chimey than the ssl1. the ssl5 doesnt quack the same way lower output pups do. some like it, some think its too different

Is a RWRP middle pickup going to quack more then using just a neck position in the middle? At this point I can’t get sweet home Alabama in position 2.

the strat used on sweet home alabama didnt have a rw/rp middle pup, hell didnt even have a 5 way switch

For 'Sweet Home' you need to run a worn out and very screwed up old Fender Twin. That's what Ed used at the time. When I saw him play the song decades later he never used the 2 or 5 positions and it didn't sound the same as the original recording. Strange. I suppose it was that old worn out twin that gave him that tone and not the pickup configuration.

Wait up

Aren't you supposed to wire either the Duncans OR the Fenders backwards (hot to ground, ground to hot) when mixing the two brands???
