Any ideas on which pickup for my bass?

Hi

I bought this cheap bass a few years ago out of curiosity - as I normally play guitar, but I do like the sound of basses.
There is only one pickup in the bass which is fairly quiet, so does anyone have suggestions on what I could replace it with?

I'm not sure what type of wood the body is made of (how can you tell?) but it has a maple fingerboard.
Do you you think the SBP-2 or SPB-3 would be a good choice?

Thanks in advance

Both the SPB-2 & SPB-3 are higher output P-Bass pickups so if you feel what you have now is to too low output then one of those two may be a good choice. The SPB-2 is warmer with boosted low end while the SPB-3 is boosted in the low and high end and is considered a more modern sounding pickup.

Thanks for the reply -

I think whatever I get will probably make it sound better than than it is now...

But as I don't really want to start hacking away at the wood (yet), I wondered how to get the best out of the "single pickup" configuration.
I've heard that...shhhh... 'dimarzio' do a split-p (dp127) that is 2 humbuckers in series, which is meant to get the most out of your bass :27:

Or could I add a coil-tap switch or something?

Cheers

There are lots of good P-Bass pickups out there and Dimarzio makes good ones. I don't have personal experience with the DP-127 so I can't say for sure how it compares to the Duncans.

IMHO, the P-Bass tone is all about simplicity and straight ahead thump so getting fancy is not really necessary. YMMV.

Thanks to "Wymore Guitars" - I appreciate the replies

I think I'll be getting the SPB-3 - it seems to be very popular, and reviews of it are very positive.

thanks again
