Any love for the ToneLab SE

I've been thinking about getting one of these but I hear the distortion models are not very good. I've also read where the board tends to be a bit noisy. Any comments?

Re: Any love for the ToneLab SE

I ran one through an Atomic. It was totally incompatible with the atomic. There is something about the Vox modelling amps and the Atomic that just does not mix. I tried EVERYTHING to get it to sound worth a damn, and just could not. When I got my little DA5, I plugged the line out into the Atomic and same thing....total barf-o-rama (excuse the valley girl accent)

I also ran it into the power amp of my Rivera. It was better but still very un-lifelike..it sounded very small and boxy still.

Through headphones it was awesome, so I'd suspect it would record direct quite well. I believe you'd really need to match a good sep power amp, and some "clean" speakers to it for a live rig.

Re: Any love for the ToneLab SE

At first I couldn't stand it when I would mess with it at the stores. Then one day I fiddled a little more with one of the patches and got a good sound out it. It was running through the clean channel of a Crate V5212. One thing with modellers, they need a very clean and balanced amp, like a keyboard amp or even just through the PA system. If I could have afforded to spend more than I could recently, I might have stepped up to that series of Vox modellers from the AD50 but with my budget, ya know.

Jeff, nice avatar, bro. :bigok: I wonder where you got that one from...LOL.

I've had the pic for a long time..its like that one you posted but without all the other stuff around the edges..IDR where I found it to be honest.

For $100 more, you can have the head version, which I like the best. The AD60 and AD120 will allow you to have almost all the features of the Tonelab (minus cab models), plus you can use it with any cab as a bedroom amp or live amp.

I really don't like thit pedal, however I havent really messed with it that much.

My friend gets great results for sweeter brown sounds thru one of these. He is a monster player with multiple endorsements. He sold off some gear due to rough times, and as much as I like the Vox, I much prefer him thru a Mesa or Bogner. He was offered the Diezel artist deal, but the price was still $3k lol.

I happen to feel the Boss stuff sounds better thru amps, and the POD has wowed me more than once in the studio

Re: Any love for the ToneLab SE

I have the table top version. I am not really into modelers or multi-effect units, but this thing is great. I like it for the wide range of tones available, and the ability to use headphones at night. But I have used it with my solid state bass amp, and my guitar tube amp, and mixed it with my different speaker cabs, and it always sounds good to me.
