Any one tried this?

I'm thinking of changing the wiring on my fat strat heres my idea. replace the 5 way switch with a 3 way. connect cool rails (neck) and fender custom shop (mid) to the three way. Use one of the tone knobs for a volume control for the JB (bridge). This way I could have all 3 pickups active at any time and any combination of pickups.

My questions are is this possible and would switching be too much of a hassle?

It is possible, but I find that set up to be somewhat complicated for live use. In my strat, to have 7 pickup selections, I installed a push/pul pot that would allow me to have all three pickups at the same time or neck and bridge together.

There's a number of different ways to perform this type of switching configuration, depending on your specific needs and wants. For example, on the Strat-clone in my sig, I have the neck and bridge Cool Rails connected to a 3-way, and the middle pickup on a separate switch. That way I can switch between the neck and bridge like a normal twin-humbucker guitar, or get the "notch" positions, or all three.

That suits my needs, but you could have any one of the pickups on the "extra" switch or blend pot. Its a nice setup.

what i was gonna do for my strat is install an on-on switch for each pickup. but that plan fell through.
