Any single coil like a CC tone?

Are there any single coils (preferably stacked for hum-cancelling) that sound similar in tone (and similar output) to a Custom Custom with its rolled off high end?

Re: Any single coil like a CC tone?

There is the APS-2 set, though it doesn't have the power of a CC, it has a similar tonal profile.

Re: Any single coil like a CC tone?

Thanks. I actually did have one of those in the middle of an old Brian Moore guitar that was HSH, forgot about that. Nice sound, definitely, but looking for something a bit hotter for the bridge of a project guitar I want to finish up soon.

Re: Any single coil like a CC tone?

That's a strange ask. If you want the output of a humbucker you probably need to go with a rail/side-by-side pickup rather than a stack. Not really familiar enough with the EQ of the Custom Custom to make a recommendation.

Re: Any single coil like a CC tone?

There is the JB Jr., which will have roughly the output of the CC, I believe, but not the same basic tone structure. Also, the Custom Shop will build a single coil sized humbucker copy of any humbucker you ask for. I believe cost is $160 per pickup. As far as I know, there is not a regular production copy of the CC in the hum canceling stacked single coil variety. Maybe the Hot Rails would be in that tone range, but I'm not as familiar with the single coil size humbuckers.

One of the members more knowledgeable about these pickups should be along shortly.

You could just take APS-2 and use linear booster to kick up the power.

Re: Any single coil like a CC tone?

Hmmmmmm. Thanks, guys. The Hot Rails might get me close since it's darker sounding from what I've read. I'll check into a linear booster, as well.

Re: Any single coil like a CC tone?

i love the aps single coils but they are just a warmer single coil and dont have all that much in common with the cc. the hot rails probably has the power of the cc and a rounded high end but probably sounds quite different, i havent a/b'd them though so who knows. might be worth a try. the hot rails is a fun pup for sure!
