Got an offer to do a heads up trade for a .50 Cal Plus head tomorrow. Would have around $350 in real money in the deal if it goes down but don't know this particular model very well. Anybody got some insight you will share on this amp?
In particular hows the loop running pedals and hows the clean?

I don't own one, but my best friend does. He gets great clean and drive tones with his. And it's built like a tank.

Thanks for the responses guys let you know if I wind up with it we are meeting at 3 Central so---.

They are cool and very powerful in a small package. Not sure about switching between the clean and drive channels but a nice amp none the less.

I posted some info on the Boogie .50 just a couple of weeks ago that you might find interesting, so use the search function and hunt it down.

Good luck!

Well it's official I now own a Boogie .50 cal + head. Still getting acquainted with it but right off can tell you the cleans are fabulous and this thing is LOUD!!! Still working with getting a balance between the clean and crunch and setting tones in particular for the crunch side. It feels a lot different than what I'm used to in particular with the Zinky Velvet. No where near the gain levels that I have on the Zinky and it feels really stiff and hard right now to me but bet it will cut like crazy in the mix and should give me that good chimey clear crunch tone that I have been sorely lacking. Will take some getting used to though as it's no where near as touch sensitive, smooooth fluid and organic feeling as the Zinky is. It's also much LOUDER and also less forgiving so you better be clean on your technique and that's not a bad thing!

congrats, what a steal! I dig the faders on it too. would be great for my sludge music as well :)

But it ain't no Mark V eh there bud ?

No, the MV has so many great tones in it you really can't compare but it's a great amp in its own right. Big fan of all of the Caliber amps--if you can't get a good rock tone out of one, it ain't the amp...

You love saying that don't you haha.. You said the same to me when I said I disliked the Marshall JVM.

Apparently my replies frustrate you...sorry chief, it is what it is. Show us some clips of you playing live with some of these amps that you dislike and maybe we can help you dial them in correctly...

Haha I think I did that before you didn't believe it was actually my band.... You legit sounded like a crazy person.

Everyone is different...what sounds good for you and your Zep cover band might sound like ass to other players. It is what it is....

Love that double SG btw. Totally original!

Oh yeah--Mr "pretend band" that likes to try and throw out judgement on other people. Dude, move on--your frustrations mean absolutely zero to me, and I can't see where you are adding anything to this thread. I'm glad the OP found a cool amp he likes--maybe someday you will too. Or you won't. I don't care either way, trust me.

I had one a few years ago and loved it but got into a very heavy and loud band, so i switched to a dual rec. i regret selling the 50 cal. It was great for cleans in church, a nice vintage tone, and handled delay very well

I ran my Alesis Video Track this morning at Church running the .50 Cal for the 1st time what you guys think?

Re: Anybody here own a Boogie 50 cal + ??

A little frustrated with the amp right now. Main issue I am fighting is the way Mesa used a single gain control on both the clean and crunch channel on this amp. When I dial the clean gain to where it's nice round and has just a bit of hair the crunch side is way to harsh thin and buzzy but when I set the crunch gain back where I want it then the clean is too weak and thin sounding. Also can't get enough bottom end to pull a fat smooth singing tone out of the crunch after setting a good clean on the main EQ the using the Auto setting on the graphic on the crunch only. The controls on this amp are set up and respond much differently than I am used to so getting with a few that have run the amp in the real world would help. Amp has potential to be a long term keeper if I can sort a couple things out here.
Tried to get on the 2 Boogie boards I could find but so far have had absolutely no response on activation from the admins on BOTH boards and both boards look to be pretty dead. Anybody here own or have owned one of these old Caliber amps who can help me work a couple things out on this rig?

Does the MB site still have the manuals up? They usually have suggested setting and the tone knobs may have to be adjusted. I wouldn't hesitate to call MB, someone may be willing to help you out.

I had the DC 50 head that I sold which isn't the same amp but has some similarities. It has separate gain and tone stacks for both channels. Even with that I found the lead channel to be too fizzy and used less gain and pedals to help contour the sound.

If Monsta-Tone is still around he knows these amp very well as he used to service and mod them. You can try to PM him, he's a really good guy and skilled.
