Anybody own and have opinions about a Gibson Flying V faded?

Just ogling craigslist and came upon one that looks to be a bit of a beater for $250. Looks like a fun one and if the neck is decent probably worth it. Maybe try and refinish it as a project.

Anyone? Thanks

A good friend of mine has one, and loves it. I love it too, I've tried buying it off him many times to no avail. His plays great, the stock 'buckers sound good (probably 490R&498T but not sure). That's a real good price for it as long as you like they way it plays. I say pull the trigger.

I had one and it was a load of fun. Id love to have another one day when financials get better.

I have a 2005 Faded V and quite like it. I need to play it more actually :D

I really didn't get on with the Gibson 500T and 496R pickups so I swapped those out pretty quickly, it also had a lot of sharp fret ends but they were sorted out after a good setup and fret dress.

Hit it, hit it hard, hit it NOW!

Then add a custom pickguard loaded with P-90s!

(do a search)

Buddy has one that I found for him used at guitar center. I cannot wait til he's tired of it so I can snake it from him. He replaced the pickups with a dimebucker and 59 and now it's even better. Love that thing.

They are fine guitars, and can be great guitars with a little TLC (fretwork, pickups, a new nut, tuners, maybe a refin). At that price, I would be mighty suspect of a twisted neck, or some other sort of non-disclosed major problem. Be sure to give it a very thorough going over before buying it.

Didn't like mine.

Refinishing isn't trivial since you need wood filler on the mahogany.

Yeah, I've always wanted to find a cheap one and refinish it......maybe even get creative and do something artistic with it like Rat Rod, steam punk, Mexican skull art, etc.

The early models had ebony boards with moon inlays and an ABR-1; later they changed to rosewood and Nashville. For the money certainly worth looking at, and if it's in good nick, hit it.

Re: Anybody own and have opinions about a Gibson Flying V faded?

Had two of them.

First one was one of the best playing and best sounding guitars I have ever owned. It even made the 496/500 sound awesome. But I never liked the way Vs "hang" on a strap and I sold it for a Explorer. Later on I realized my mistake and bought another hoping for a second lightning strike.. I recall having some issue that Gibson needed to sort out with that one to make it playable. It was a decent instrument, but nowhere near the equal of the first one.

These were both when the prices were around $600 dollars. Then they bumped them up to a grand.

I really didn't get on with the Gibson 500T and 496R pickups...

I'd look at swapping magnets in them if the tones aren't what you want. I've put an A8 in my 500T (I think I needed to replace the spacer too), and that improved the tone.

I'd definitely jump on it for $250. Plus the pickup routing fits P90s, so if it were me I'd buy a new guard and do it that way.

I went explorer and couldn't deal with where the arms end up and later got the faded V. The most surprising thing was how different they sounded. The V parking that much wood away from the neck seems to make a real difference.

In typical fashion I took too long and it's gone. Blegh

I swapped the pickups out years ago for something less output and a Humbucker sized P90 in the neck. Alot happier with it since.
