I got a 59b with a a2 mag that i don`t use and a friend of mine want to
try it in his epi sg. The thing is that i have to swap the magnet from
a2 to a5 and i just wonder if it`s worth the effort.
He got an reissue gibson sg/lp custom with classis pu`s as his main guitar and
want to make this epi a bit closer to that one.

Re: Anybody tried a 59 in a sg ?

I remember reading somebody with a lot of clout around here (I dont' remember who but i think it was Gearjoneser) say a set of 59's perfect for an SG for classic to hard rock and that if you've got to have a higher output pickup for the bridge use a C5. I really dig the 59 neck in a Fender's neck possition, it's just a little bassy...so imagining it in the bridge of an SG would mean more mids and more treble so (theoretically) better tone.

I don't speak from experience tho. The only SG bridge pickup i'm familiar with is Gibson's 500T and i like it enough that i'm in no rush to change it...

I'd say to just install it for him, since you're good at doing it fast. Most likely, it'll sound really good, like a Seth. If it's too soft sounding, put in the A5. I'm sure an A2 59 sounds good, although I haven't tried one. It'll likely sound better than a Gibson Classic 57.

It was Lew. He's loves '59's in an SG. I haven't tried it yet, 'cause I'm stil loving the Seth's in mine. I did try the C5 & was pretty happy with the tone, but went back to the Seth's.

Lew knows what he's talking about, so check out the '59's:smokin:

Re: Anybody tried a 59 in a sg ?

I have posted on this topic inumerable times and the consensus is that the '59's rock on the SG. The bridge is the tricky part of an SG b/c alot of pups tend to sound thin there, but there is a Duncan custom bridge pup called a BroBucker that people are RAVING about. I've never heard it but like I said, people on the Forum love it.

BTW, I cleared all of my guitars out and now I'm just playing a Custom Shop SG '62 Reissue with Burstbuckers...it's awesome...fattest sound I've ever had from an SG.

Re: Anybody tried a 59 in a sg ?

I have a Brobucker in my own SG's bridge spot...For me the 59B either with an A2 or the A5 was too bright and a bit on the thin side for my particular instrument...Alot of guys like a ceramic magnet pickup or a beefier wound bridge pickup(CC or C5 etc). The SG suffers from the fact that the bridge is slightly more forward in position compared to a Les Paul and this makes it a brighter guitar in the bridge spot...You do get great note clarity and articulation with the 59 however and bottom line is,you'll have to try it in your friend's guitar and see?
