anyone done a mag swap in the Black Winter

As with most pickups if you swap the mag it typically becomes a different pickup that is already produced....ie custom + a5=custom 5, custom+a2=custom custom...etc

what does the BW translate to if any? who has tried different mags in the BW?

I think it is a unique wind. I haven't seen anyone here talk about mag swapping in a BW, but would be interested if anyone has experience.

I'd think it'd become something similar to the Distortion if you removed the side magnets, or into a JB-alike if you change the whole structure to a single A5. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be the exact same, though. The insulation on the wire looks unmistakably different in the BW compared to the other JB family members.

I posted a while back about swapping the magnet on the Black Winter to an Alnico 8, but nobody seemed to have done it, IIRC. It would be interesting, but honestly, I'm pretty happy about how the BW is unmodded.

the custom family and jazz/aph1 are the only confirmed duncans with the same wind and different magnets as far as i know. i dont have a bw so havent done any swapping but im sure, as with most buckers, it might be useful for someone trying to shift things in a certain direction

The BW is a design with a specific target, both tone- and market-wise, hence the non-existing mag-swap data.

Funny, I thought it was a broad and versatile design with crappy advertising.

Well, let's call the advertising 'incomplete'. It is marketed for metal players, but if it wasn't (and had a different name), I think it would be just as popular.

Not if they were called Scum Drops.

Ha ha ha ha!

I agree with the above...the BW is essentially perfect in stock form and most seem to feel that way, hence little to no reports of mag swapping.

There was someone here a few years ago that tried A9 mags and found it a bit thin, preferring A8 over the A9, but it wasn't necessarily better than the stock form as I recall. Another member tried A2 mags, but ended up going back to stock, as well.

If you want something different, there are plenty of pickups that offer tweaks on the same basic formula and are fine-tuned to other types of magnets (Distortion, JB, etc).
