Anyone ever compared a Mesa Boogie head to a Hughes and Kettner Triamp?

Hey.

I am curious as to how a Hughes and Kettner Triamp (MK1 or 2) would compare to something like Mesa Boogie Rectoverb or a Dual/Tripple Rectifier?

Because I live in South Africa, I cant get Boogies here but the Hughes and Kettner amps are common. Is it worth ordering a Boogie from overseas?
(i've never even heard a boogie played live)

Which of the two, in your opinion, is best?

My friend fretfire just got the rectoverb. It should be a great head. check for his review , probably later tonight.

You are blessed. You live where Hughes & Kettner is common. The Triamp will handle anything Boogie has ever done and then some. If you ever get to play a Rectoverb you'd realize how good things are where you live. Versatility is the key factor with the Triamp, and it's really a pretty awesome amp.

I have tried out one of the first run tri-amps (one that didn't have the glowing plexiglass front.) It had 3 channels, and each channel has a switch to boost or add extra overdrive. With that switch, it is like having 6 channels in a round about way. The clean channel has tones reminiscent of fender. With the switch on that channel I was able to get a sound that reminded me of older overdriven fender amps, great for blues. The second channel reminded me of marshall amps mainly the 800. that channel had the marshall growl. The third channel has a very modern "american" sounding distortion. I would say that the third channel would get you into the rectoverb ballpark. It would easily do heavy to NU-metal. I didn't use the footswitch, so i don't know how the switching worked. the back panel had a lot of "stuff" on it, one thing was a direct box, which would be nice for recording. All in all if I were in your position, I wouldn't pay the extra to import a Mesa, I would get the Tri-Amp. I wouldn't feel like i was comprimising either. hope that helps.
