Anyone ever play a Fender Pro Junior?

Hey guys.

I have a Laney LC30 amp that I've been trying to sell for a while now with no luck. Then I was doing a PA job on saturday and my friends brother turns up to perform with a Pro Junior amp. He mentions that he wants something with more power and also that has a separate distortion channel.

We get talking and we both say that we want an amp like what the other has. So he asks if I'd be interested in a trade: my Laney for his Fender.

Does anyone think this is a good deal? As I have no experience of this specific amp.

Thanx for any opinions.

I've always heard the Pro Juniors sound great. My amp tech uses one for a bench tester amp. Very simple circuit that emulates a sort of Champ tone with EL 84s.

You'll find plenty of comments over on the FDP forum.

I Own an original Blonde Pro Juinor....Great little 15 watt amp...Loud as heck, sounds great through my V30 Marshall 4x12 cab also...No reverb but a great overdriven lead tone and decent tweed like clean tone..Uses EL84 British type tubes...Kinda Marshall like also in it's grind...Great amp to crank up and record with...These amps are worth about the $250 range used depending on condition..The original blone ones are worth a little bit more....

Thanx for the replies guys.

I was thinking about using it as a 'crank up and record' amp and it sounds just like what I want. The lack of reverb doesn't bother me as I don't use any reverb at all on any amp :)

I'll give it a go and see how I like it.

I'm thinking it'd sound huge through my Orange 4x12 with Greenbacks ;)

A Pro Juinor downright rips through a 4x12 cabinet! It's a very cool and great sounding little 15 watt amp with alot of power to boot...The little 10" Ceramic Emminence in mine is cool though also..Some have alnico speakers too.

I have no idea what speaker this Pro Junior has. All I know is that it's relatively new amp, and that it seems simple as hell to use.

I can't wait to try it through my 4x12 now :)

If the magnet is round,it's ceramic...If it looks square in shape then it's the earlier alnico that some earlier PJs came with...Supposedly the alnicos are better? I Like the ceramic though and I've not played through that alnico?

yeah, I would think an alnico speaker would sound a little smoother, maybe a little less apparent volume, but nicer OD. and yeah, I've always heard they have a Marshall like tone.

Oh,the PJ rips and grinds once you get the volume control up over about 5...My daughter uses mine to practice through with a tele..Man,tell me she doesn't have it made already? Another lefty though...LOL :smack: She has lots of guitars to pick from though.. :burnout:

Re: Anyone ever play a Fender Pro Junior?

I have a vague memory that the speaker magnet was round, but thats just something I remember vaguely seeing :)

John, I'd love to have as many guitars as your daughter to pick from ;)

Re: Anyone ever play a Fender Pro Junior?

For the money the PJ is a nice amp, but many people (myself included) have had persistent problems with background noise. Mine is back in the shop now. It might not be a big problem for gigs or jams, but it limits the recording potential. If you can swing more $$$, then you might consider an Orange AD15 to go with that Orange 4x12 cab. There are some people out there who will gut a PJ and transform it into a nice PTP amp for reasonable money, too, so that's another option. The used price for a PJ should not exceed $200-250 in most cases.

Thanx for the post Kelsey.

A small Orange amp is something I've been toying with for a while, but I think in the end they're more than I want to spend.

I'm only really considering the Pro Junior because I have the Laney amp lying around going un-used and I think I'd use a PJ more :)

I'll keep my eye out on Ebay etc and see what I come up with.

Thanx again.

Re: Anyone ever play a Fender Pro Junior?

It sounds good for the money but stock it is a bit harsh but a speaker and tube change would save that. It distorts pretty early and i dont think it is as lush as more expensive el84 amps (VOX's and their various clones) but this is understood and the Pro Junior has great crunch fro the price. Does anyone know if they r cathode or fixed bias?

Re: Anyone ever play a Fender Pro Junior?

They are fixed bias with no adjustment pot. I had a black tolex '96 model. I put a Jensen P10R (alnico) in it and it was a great practice and recording amp. Definite tweed character to the OD. I agree with others comments about hooking it up to a 4 X 12 cab. I sold mine when I bought my Gibson GA15-RV.
The Pro Jr. is a good buy at it's price but it would sound better with a 12" speaker.

I always thought the PJ was cathode biased and I thought it had something like a 25 ohm resistor from the EL84s to ground?

Re: Anyone ever play a Fender Pro Junior?

I have one and i love it! Great tone, lots of balls. I play samll gigs with it and have been recording with it too. Very versatile.

I thought that too until i put some different EL84's and it cut the output and starting crackling (TOOK THEM STRAIGHT OUT). Fender website and manual doesnt help at all.

I had put a set of NOS Phillips EL84s into mine and they are great...

Re: Anyone ever play a Fender Pro Junior?

Wow, this thread is almost 2 years old!? I sold the Laney amp I mentioned in the 1st post 2 years ago in July :D
