Anyone ever service a Gibson IV Bass? Truss rod question.

Got a luthier buddy who is perplexed by the truss rod. He can't seem to find a wrench that fits it...and he is certainly skilled so it must be an oddball item. Anyone know if has been a problem in the past or why the correct wrench is? Thanks.

Would you happen to have a picture of the truss rod end? If we can see a picture of it, we might be able to advise you better.

Fender truss rod adjusters typically have some sort of slot into which the appropriate tool is inserted.

Gibson instruments tend to employ a socket wrench that fits over a hexagonal nut on the end of the truss rod.

I'm not where the bass is, but it looked, from where I stood, like the hexagonal nut. It's at the top of the headstock.

If I recall correctly, the Gibson truss rod nut wrench uses a 5/16" socket.

Just to get back to basics. Here is the Gibson truss rod adjuster.

However, you said that you are having a luthier look at it, and it's not a standard. He said it is something else.

Since it is a Gibson, they have been pretty standard in their builds. I know the 80's was an odd time for them, but I don't know that they went to a different type of truss rod during that period. Again, at this point without a picture there is not too much more any of us can advise.

I have one of those, I can't remember the size, but I did find a 1/4" drive socket that fit it last time I adjusted it a few years ago, 5/16" does sound about right
