I'm looking into something cheap and fairly transparent to drive my Pod XT.

I won't be using the distortion, so please spare me the usual "solid state distortion is crap" line. I want clean, fat power in a small-ish combo.

I asked the seller if I could come try it out, and they haven't responded yet.

Anyone know anything about the older Yamahas? I had a HUGE 2x12 100w combo many years ago, and it was a great clean amp.

Thanks!

Re: Anyone familiar with this Yamaha amp?

I had a G100-112 version years ago. That amp was actual co-designed by Paul Rivera of Rivera Amps before he went to Fender. There's some real decent stuff in that one. I ran that in stereo with an old blackface Vibrolux that Paul Rivera modded for me back in teh day.

Re: Anyone familiar with this Yamaha amp?

Cool, thanks. I didn't know Paul Rivera worked for Yamaha. So would the G100-112 be the single speaker version of this thing?

Re: Anyone familiar with this Yamaha amp?

Correct. I don't know if he actually worked for them or had his hand in developing it. I can't remember. He also helped develop the Pignose Crossmix amp around that same time. He was at Pignose in the late 70's. And his assistant was none other than Lee Jackson.

Re: Anyone familiar with this Yamaha amp?

A few years ago, I was looking for a combo amp to drive my Yamaha DG-stomp digital pre-amp and funnily enough I tried that exact same amp.

To be honest, when I put it through the clean channel, it coloured and distorted the sound of the DG-stomp too much for it be used at "driven" levels. Didn't allow for much clean head-room and transparency plus the cabinet seemed to boom/shake/resonate when I tried to throw a bit of bass at it.
