Anyone good at identifying faults?

So I'm currently using a DSL 50 as a bit of a stop-gap amp. I was rocking out on it last night, and today it's quiet as a mouse. With the volume fully open you can just about hear it, any thing below and it disappears.

Is this likely to be just tubes? Or something more serious? No burning, no blackened bits on the boards, just no volume.

Yes. The guy in my office that doesn't do anything all day is just plain lazy.

Re: Anyone good at identifying faults?

Take a look at the output side of things. Valves, loudspeaker connections, impedance selector.

Another possibility is the Effect Loop status.

Re: Anyone good at identifying faults?

If you're absolutely sure all of the connections are good, then start checking tubes one at a time starting with the power tubes. It doesn't seem logical to me that, from what you describe, it would be the tubes, but it's the best place to start. Might also check all of the fuses.

Re: Anyone good at identifying faults?

It could just be a bad jack input. I have a Marshall 900 & it started giving me similar problem. It turned out to be a dirty input jack on the effects loop. I wrapped a piece of fine Emory cloth around a stick small enough to fit inside the jack & push/puled it back and fourth & that seemed to correct it. Its been fine since.

Re: Anyone good at identifying faults?

I've seen this before a few times. Speaker output jack to the speaker. Somewhere in there. Quite often, the speaker output jack has lost ground. Bad cable? I had a short cable made recently that had the little clips that connect to the speaker lugs (spade lugs type thing). I chased my tail for a bit of time before realizing my brand new cable wasn't screwed together very well. Put a new speaker cable in between and sound was great. I'm going back to soldering up my own 1/4 connectors and soldering the wires straight to the speaker lugs. Out-fancied myself.
