Anyone have a Jazz(n) in an SG?

Who among ye has a Jazz(n) in your SG? I've always been worried that it'd be too bright in an SG. I like balance and diversity in my pickups, and I've been thinking about either an A2P or Pearly Gates as a better option, but just want to get a few opinions on the Jazz beyond its clarity.

Not SGs, but I've played them in several small- and thin-bodied mahogany guitars (PRS, PRS SE, Schechter, yadda yadda), usually to good effect. Not overly bright in general -- I almost said, "Not too bright," but we're talking about guitars, not my boss -- and anyway, that's what the Tone control and height screws on your guitar are for. Still, it's a very clear pup, and responds more like a Strat pup than a PAF: it doesn't tolerate sloppy technique.

To me the thing with a JazzN is more its blandness than anything else. Neck PAF's are fairly bright too, but they have more character and flavor to them. I'd go with a '59N or PGN instead of a JazzN. I'm also one for diversity & using a variety of different PU models from different manufacturers, but there are some PU's that aren't all that appealing; the Jazz is kind of borderline.

I ave one in my G400 and love it. I get an almost single coil attack and its lack of boomy quality really opens up the neck position.

I could use more mids. but i find myself turning them up at the amp anyway since Ive got a C5 in the bridge.

That's quite a good summation, really. I maintain that it has many virtues, but it lacks character in comparison to a PAF. I keep fiddling with mine to get more edge, or more fullness, and never can seem to get both. But on the other hand, the flexibility and responsiveness appeal to me (even if sometimes I'd trade both for one really great tone). Eventually I plan to use it with an A2 as a bridge pup for my Strat, where I think it'd be much happier.

i had one in my SG for a while. while it wasn't neccisarily overly bright, it didn't have enough low end and warmth for me to want to keep it in there.

A JazzN will be very good, a '59n will be GREAT.

Your choice. :cool2:

Wow, thats interesting! We are both lovers of the '59, but I don't think of the Jazz at all like that. The Jazz reminds me of a slightly brighter '59, not as boomy in the bass (for the neck).

That's how I hear it also. I had one in the neck of an SG-X (did a neck route), and I liked it quite a bit. I had the stock 500 Gibby pup in the bridge (fairly hot), and they balanced well. I like the Jazz because of the less boomy low end in the neck position, although I can see why some would find it blander overall than a 59.

Having used a 59n since then, I might go 59 if doing it again, because I usually stick to single note solos w/a neck bucker.

For some apllications a JazzN might be fine, but I think a '59N will be much better most of the time. To my ears, the JazzN is like a neutered PAF.

I had a '59N in this SG, and the scoop was too much for me to handle, too boomy and brittle all at once. But I've not heard people speaking so disunited about the PGn or A2Pn, so those are gaining some ground...

if it was too scooped, boomy and brittle, then you might just need an a4 or a2 magnet in there to flatten or fatten the EQ, respectively;)

Re: Anyone have a Jazz(n) in an SG?

+1 on the A4 in a Jazz N -- it doesn't equal a '59, but it's got its own modest mojo. A2 just made it too tame for me, and the stiffness of A4 Viagrified it nicely.

Re: Anyone have a Jazz(n) in an SG?

If I ever get another SG, the C-5 or Brobucker will be in the bridge, and it'll have a PGn. I know I'd like a Jazz N or B in the neck, but if I were specifically buying an SG neck pickup, it'd be the PGn.

The reason is that mahogany is soft and buttery by nature, and the PGn is like a Jazz n with a bit of rudeness thrown in.
