Anyone have a Slash Custom Shop

I am looking for a new neck pup and am interested in the Slash A2PH Custom shop. Does anyone here have one of these and if so how does it compare to the '59, which is what I currently have in my guitar.

Re: Anyone have a Slash Custom Shop

I don't know about the custom slash, but I don't think it's much different from the aph-1

Anyway, the aph-1n has a warm midrange that easily makes up for it's lack of true bass. It also has a nice chime on top as opposed to the 59's twang.

The 59 has that crisp top end and the deep bottom end...the aph-1 has more of a midrange sound but with plenty of sparkle and chime on top to keep things clear.

Re: Anyone have a Slash Custom Shop

Just get a regular ole alnico II pro......unless you're just dying to pay $140 (or whatever it is) for a pickup.

Re: Anyone have a Slash Custom Shop

And just remember what Evan said:

Evan Skopp said:
I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but Slash does not use Custom Shop pickups. He uses regular, off-the-shelf APHs. Seymour and MJ may have designed a version for Slash and sent them to him to check out, but that's not what he's using at this point.

Sorry if anyone got the wrong impression about what pickups Slash is using. Just to reiterate, they are stock APH pickups. Not custom shop.

Re: Anyone have a Slash Custom Shop

I will have to find it but, a few weeks after that I belive Evan had a post that claimed that there was in fact Slash custom shop pickups that slash has been playing.

Re: Anyone have a Slash Custom Shop

This is what Evan said 8 days after the post about the Slash pickups
Re: slash sound

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just had a chat with Seymour about the Slash pickups and he has, in fact, wound pickups for Slash in the past. However, the big difference between what he's wound for Slash and off-the-shelf pickups is that the Custom Shop versions have single conductor cable. Otherwise, the magnet and winding spec are basically the same -- however, his winding machine is slightly different from the ones on the Production Floor.

Suffice to say, if you want Slash's sound, you can get it with off-the-shelf APHs. If you want single conductor cable, you can order your APHs that way from your dealer. However, if you want Seymour's DNA on your pickup, you're going to have to order it from the Custom Shop (and pay custom shop prices).

Re: Anyone have a Slash Custom Shop

But, According to MJ they are scatter wound. Sounds like they would have to sound different than standard APH's

Re: Anyone have a Slash Custom Shop

bump!! I would love to know the deal with them.

Re: Anyone have a Slash Custom Shop

Sorry if this is a little old, but I would like to know if there is a difference as well.

Re: Anyone have a Slash Custom Shop

As a pickup junkie who has tried both the APH1 and Slash CS pups, let me try to answer it in the following scenarios:

Scenario #1: Original pups in Les Paul are Antiquities. Changed the neck to APH1 (production model) in hopes that it will handle gain better, and of course sound more like slash  HOWEVER, the APH1 left a bland taste in tone compared to harmonically complex antiquity neck pickup, like drinking a supermarket table wine after sipping good vintage wine. So in 3 days' time, swapped the Antiquity back in.

Scenario #2: Original pups in Les Paul are Antiquities (after going through a round of 59/JB, Wagners, magnet swaps, etc.). Replaced the Ants with a pair of Slash CS pups. YESSS!!! Same complexity as the antiquities, but with a more Slash-voiced sweet tones. Definitely nails what I wanted :smoker:

Not much of a scientific comparison, but hope this helps...

Re: Anyone have a Slash Custom Shop

I have to agree with Gunbucker. I have both the regular APH-1's in my pair of Gibson Slash Signature Les Pauls and 4 sets of CS Slash's from MJ. The regular pickups are Slash's sound but the CS pickups just have an extra 5% mojo factor with a bit more complexity. Plus I ordered them with Antiquity hardware and single conductor braided hookup wire. I like and only use A2P's and Custom Shop/Historic Les Pauls and play at loud volume-Marshall '77 JMP Dave Friedman modded 100 watt Marshall and JCM2000 DSL 100 amps through 4x12" 1960BV and 1936 2x12" cabs with a David Friedman modded Cry Baby. Either way the A2P's are my favorite pickup and I have owned almost all the boutique stuff from Voodoo, Rolph, Wagner, various Antiquity and J.Page HB's as well as all the Burstbuckers, Classic 57's, late '60's T-Tops, etc. I am also a major Slash fan and very much influenced by his playing-I get a lot of comments that I sound a lot like him with my band, Rayvn from Philly.

Re: Anyone have a Slash Custom Shop

Todd,
with your rig, do you get close to the AFD album tone? I'd love to see some pics of everything. :) Also, you say the regular APH1's are Slash's tone, and the CS ones have a little more mojo. Do you feel that the extra charge for the CS ones are worth it, over the price for the stocks?

Thanks!

Re: Anyone have a Slash Custom Shop

I can get pretty close to the AFD tone although I am not trying to copy Slash 100%. He is a very major influence on my playing but I also love Page, Perry, Kosseff, Beck, Mick Taylor and a few others. I am also still working on a learning curve as far as the JCM2000 is concerned. As for the extra $ for the CS Slash's I would do it since that way you get an APH-1 which you can tweak with MJ's input plus I think all of her handwound work is better than anything else available. Be forewarned that APH-1 bridge pickups are not that powerful. In fact the other night at the gig, I was noticing that my bridge pickup was not cutting as much as I was getting from stock Burstbuckers in a few of my Pauls-all are now removed. I think that I have to work with amp tweaking a bit more and I am also going to have Bob Bradshaw of Custom Audio Electronics build me a buffer/splitter box so I can feed both of my heads, channel switch the JCM, have an output for a direct box for the Slash Sig gtr Fishman bridge and also have a clean gain boost built into the box so I can pump the bridge pickup a bit. I think Slash uses an eq-either a Boss GE-7 or MXR 10 band eq for this. His amps are also based on a diode clipping circuit which is almost like having a distortion box built into the tube signal path of the amp. My heads are pure tube path all the way through-that may be modded too at some point. I will eventually get some pics of the whole rig including gtrs, amps, etc. I also just grabbed a Dunlop DB-01 Cry Baby From Hell. The Friedman modded Cry Baby is not responding as good as I wanted it to plus the DIme Wah has boost function and wider sweeps. The Bradshaw modded Cry Baby that I had and sold was also excellent and I will probably get another as well as a Dunlop rack wah(new version) soon.
