Anyone have experience with Michael Kelly guitars?

A student asked me how good they are and all I could say was they seem like great values and they get a lot of good reviews... Can anyone dig into more detail?

Gotta say that the Hybrid 55 looks like a piezo tele on steroids and I wonder if that neck pup is a firebird design?

It’s hard for me to give you specifics since I don’t know what model it was but I played one once that belonged to a student and it felt like a nice Epiphone.

Thanks for input.

It was the 55... he thought the teleish shape would produce a tele like tone and I told him that humbuckers will be thicker, but I wanted to go beyond the generic answer.

Re: Anyone have experience with Michael Kelly guitars?

I've owned 2 Michael Kelly guitars and gotten decent play time with more from attending 2 recent NAMM shows.

The guitars are cool. The finishes are often beautiful, the designs are often interesting, and the partnerships with pickup manufacturers (models loaded with Duncans, Fralins, Bare Knuckles, etc.) are even more interesting. I actually like the Rockfield pickups that come stock on lower-end models. There was a time when people would buy Rockfield pickups as aftermarket replacements.

The 2 MK guitars I had were a 1957, the top-of-the-line T-style model, and a Patriot Enlightened, a weight-relieved LP variant. I parted with both - the 1957 had a shredder-type neck profile I couldn't gel with, and the Patriot Enlightened had neck dive. But both guitars played well and sounded good. Build quality was decent on the 1957 and flawless on the Patriot Enlightened.

I would put the brand, at least on the electric side, as being competitive with MIM Fenders, higher end Epiphones, or mid-level Schecters. I don't have any experience with MK acoustics or mandolins, which I understand to be significant parts of their business.

Pretty sure is just a knockoff order from a licensed contract manufacturer that also build LTDs and Epiphones?

Just look at the country and specs. Korea will probably be OK, Indonesia might be OK, and China will probably be steaming guano...

PS tell your student that for the money that a Korean guitar currently commands new, he could just go get a professional Japanese or American instrument with a few battle scars on the used market.

How is a 2017 Korean made PRS for example, is better than a beat-up Strat from 1975? I am curious to know.

They're both kinda meh?

But the 75 strat is "collectible" now so you can sell it and buy yourself a real PRS, ESP, FMIC usa, or FujiGen built axe instead

Because a high-end FMIC American or ESP Vintage Plus will CERTAINLY demolish the '75 3-bolter

Re: Anyone have experience with Michael Kelly guitars?

I have a patriot custom.
It is a darn good playing and sounding guitar. I have often contemplated selling all my guitars but that one.. No, it isnt the most magnificent guitar on the planet..... But, it is a damn good guitar. And considering the price.... Its a super damn good guitar.
The build quality is excellent, the frets are very well dressed. Mine came with a Tone Pros and saddle. The stock pickups werent bad.. I did change the bridge pickup to a Rio BBQ. But.... I left the stock neck pickup.. Which says alot as I change the pickups on everything.....

If I could have started out on a guitar that good... I may have never become the gear slut I am now... I honestly have often thought.... I should sell all the guitars I have and keep the Michael Kelly....No, it isnt the greatest guitar in the world... But... It is good enough that I could feel confident gigging with it. and if I wasnt spoiled, I could easily enjoy it as my one and only.

He said buying a used US or MIJ guitar made more sense than a new Korean one.

However, my dad has a ‘73 Strat. My Korean G&L is infinitely better in every way, minus resale value.

Re: Anyone have experience with Michael Kelly guitars?

I've worked on a number of them, and they seem to be quite decent axes - some are quite nice.

Just got my new samash cat and mk has a nice 2 page layout which probably explains where my student found them.

Thanks for very useful feedback!

Re: Anyone have experience with Michael Kelly guitars?

There is a local shop that carries them, all of them I've played have been really nice, and very playable off the rack. They seem to be on par with the mid-level Schecters, maybe a little better at the price point.

Re: Anyone have experience with Michael Kelly guitars?

The mid-level Schecter comment has me very intrigued. I love my two Korean Schecters!

Awhile back I posted here asking for P90 guitar recommendations and a couple folks mentioned the Michael Kelly Patriot Special I believe? Found one at an obscure music shop and was very impressed with the feel of it, it had great sustain too as I recall. Didn't buy it but my experience was positive.

For anyone that wants a great looking, great playing axe at a good price they seem like a good buy. Sorry I don't have more concrete to share

That's what I meant. Thanks for clarifying.

Yeah discrediting Asian guitars simply cause they are made in Asia is just shortsighted.

Re: Anyone have experience with Michael Kelly guitars?

I added a middle pickup to this one awhile back... It's one of the chambered ones...
