Anyone have experience with polyurethane finishing?

I have an RG 5 series that I'm painting cream and black circles (Think ZW) for an Ozzy/ZW tribute band. I have ample success in finishing with Nitro, so I'm certain I'm up for the task. What I don't have are any resources for purchasing or studying up on details...

If anyone could help the assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Why not just do it in nitro, if you're experienced with it and comfortable using it?

The guy is really rough player and I know Nitro on top of Poly wouldn't adhere so well... I don't plan on stripping it, just sanding it to 220, doing 2 flash coats, laying down the pigment, then 2-3 Poly coats...

If I go Nitro, I'd definitely strip the guitar, and it's got a lot of poly on it!

Besides, I wanna broaden my horizons and learn a new craft of my trade.

THanks for the reply!

Stripping poly is not at all easy. It took me two months to strip a PRS down to the bare wood. It was a transparent finish so I had to go all the way down to refinish it.

You can put nitro on top of poly though. You might need to have enough roughness for mechanical as well as chemical adhesion. Think at least a 600 wet sanding before you go with the new color coat.

I would certainly consider using nitro instead of poly for the simple reason it goes on thinner. It's difficult to get a thin poly finish. By the time you get to the clear coat, and with a poly undercoating left on, you could end up with a very heavy finish indeed.

Try wet sanding off the clear and color coat starting with 320 but leave the poly primer and grain filling in place. Then prepare the surface with 400 or 600 wet sanding.
