Anyone have one of those Yamaha desktop modelling amps?

Re: Anyone have one of those Yamaha desktop modelling amps?

I had an X, can't give you a rundown of all the models, but I kinda wish I still had it. Awesome practice amp, probably the best models I have heard (although I have never played through a Fractal or Kemper), based on the THR10X, if I was looking for a new amp I would definitely be looking at a THR100.

Great vids on utube and yeah, they sound that good:

Re: Anyone have one of those Yamaha desktop modelling amps?

Thanks for the replies, guys, I appreciate it. If I have to talk myself into liking a product, that means I don't like it.

It's weird, all the THR10s I played *sounded* good, they just didn't feel good. That puts them in the same category, for me, as EMGs. I love what comes out of the speaker, but not my relationship as a player with my signal path.

The X was indeed the most likely candidate for me. In particular, the Southern Hi setting had some really nice blues tones with the gain rolled back. I didn't like the Brown sound settings as much as I expected to - they still sounded a bit modern to me, even Brown I, but maybe I didn't tweak enough.

It's OK, Mincer is probably right. I get so much joy out of playing real tube amps (and really small ones) that I still have plenty of options. It's a great time for gear now, that's for sure.

Re: Anyone have one of those Yamaha desktop modelling amps?

If you're used to the thump and push of a bigger amp and speaker setup, the THRs won't satisfy that need for physical feedback. That said, they do fill a small room nicely and sound even better recorded :)

Re: Anyone have one of those Yamaha desktop modelling amps?

The recording thing is what is drawing me to them, honestly. I'm not going to be able to do any bedroom recording in my small apartment with either of my tube amps, but I still want to be able to record stuff. I need to figure out if I got the place I applied for before I really go too much to town with all of this.

Because when recording, most of that "thump" has to be tamed with a bass cut.

I agree, it may not be for you. I also agree that if you are looking for the tube stack feel in a small practice amp, you probably won't find it.

Re: Anyone have one of those Yamaha desktop modelling amps?

If money is not an issue why don't you get something like Two Notes Torpedo Live and use it with your tube heads for recording?

Re: Anyone have one of those Yamaha desktop modelling amps?

Also consider the Boss GT-001. It's in the same price range as the THR10's and is perfect for desktop jamming. To listen without headphones, though, you'd need to run it into your computer, or a boombox, or an amp. That might be the downside for your needs.

Re: Anyone have one of those Yamaha desktop modelling amps?

Well, if you mostly need it for recording, you might consider software, too.

Re: Anyone have one of those Yamaha desktop modelling amps?

Software is no fun. You gotta have knobs to twiddle. :D

Re: Anyone have one of those Yamaha desktop modelling amps?

It seems like it comes with some software, so that's a plus.

That two notes thing looks cool, but none of my amps are head's.

Having the speakers is a big deal, I'd rather not have to use headphones if I can avoid it.

Re: Anyone have one of those Yamaha desktop modelling amps?

I had the 10X, wanted something more articulate, so now I have the regular 10, version 2. The clean, crunch and lead settings are great, but the Brit hi SUCKS. Far too much treble, and has that annoying hiss that almost all high gain modeling has, where it comes in at the end of the note or chord you just played. I guess it's supposed to sound like a JCM800, but it doesn't. There's too much gain and the bass is too loose. The modern setting is a little better but not my cup of tea.

The best two settings are the clean and crunch, IMO. If you have humbuckers, you can get that "vocal" sounding overdrive from the crunch setting.

If you're anything like me, you'll eventually want something with bigger speakers, more volume, more cojones, etc.

The built-in hall reverb on these amps is really something, though.

Exactly my thoughts. I would like to add that it does sound good with tube screamer type of pedal so that's another plus. However I tried it with RAT and it was horrible, so thin with instant uncontrollable feedback. I'd rather invest in some nice monitors and go software route.
