Anyone here have a vintage Traynor amp?

I'm talking about the all-tube Traynors with the black tolex, salt and pepper grill cloth, slanted logo, and silver knobs from the 60's and 70's.

They're quite common on the used market here, and they are usually priced very low ... at least relative to Fenders and Marshalls of the same era. The Guitar Mate and Studio Mate (weird 4x8" speaker config) seem to be the most common.

I don't have much experience with them. What do you guys know?

Thanks!

Re: Anyone here have a vintage Traynor amp?

i don't own any but the word is it is hit or miss with them... some models were very good and some were awful sounding... all were made like tanks....

put it this way.... if i saw one that sounded good, for a great price, i'd own it....

The 100 watt early 70's heads are winners i hear.... model number i have no idea

Re: Anyone here have a vintage Traynor amp?

i had a '72 4x8" studio mate with verb&tremolo....WICKED amp...never had any problems with it....deffinatly a good buy....

i currently have a '73 Bassmate 1 15" speaker 8ohm, 2 12AX7 & 2 EL34 tubes....it SMOKES man!!...crank it up and away ya go!..and it wont kill your ears!!:P

Re: Anyone here have a vintage Traynor amp?

I have one (Bass Master II), a friend has one Bass Master. Both are heads. Both have a Plexi-to bassman style vibe and are very well built, good sounding amps in that vein. I am not sure about hit and miss, in these models I have not heard of any misses.

Have two. they sound great thru a 2x15 cab cranked, and take pedals well, like distortion. they are both put away- a beast , and a nother nice one, but cant remeber models#.

Re: Anyone here have a vintage Traynor amp?

a buddy has a 2xEL84 that had a 12" speaker and a closed back. Not a bad amp for him as he is a harp player. We poppped a new speaker into it and replaced a couple of caps and he was back in bidness.
