Anyone here know what type of pickups vai

used on the eat em and smile album? His tone seemed to change alot(Brighter to me) on skyscraper and even more so on slip of the tongue. I'm sure he played Ibanez guitars on all those albums(with dimarzio's) anyone know the type he used on eat em and smile?

IIRC he was unsing PAF pros for the buckers- and likely a HS2 or something for the single coil.

I believe he recorded that album with the green meanie, and there's tons of info on the net about that guitar....

IIRC he did use Green Meanie (also known as the Crossroads Charvel) and experimented with several different DiMarzios. He also had the Performance guitars and the original JEMs (not the Ibbys - they bought the JEM thing from the guy who built Vais guitars).

He did not get his signature DiMarzios until after Passion and Warfare. I have an old Guitar magazine article where he and Satch are interviewed, and Satch talks about his Freds, to which Vai responds "got a Wilma, Betty, or Barney?"
He then states he's going to get with DiMarzio abotu some custom pickups. Then we had Evos.

He was also using the Carvin X100Bs.


As an aside, I've been digging the crap out of Eat 'Em and Smile lately. Had it on vinyl when it came out back in the day, but picked up the CD a few months ago. My God, Vai's playing was so clean!

He was using PAF Pros back then into carvins and modded marshalls.

Yeah, I love that album, but more for Vai/Sheehan's playing than the tone. It does sound like PAF Pros that I've owned...kinda flat on top and slightly blurry in the mids under gain...but I like 'em clean for rhythm!

vai used a X2N with zappa then he switched to a DSD for a bit and then to a set of paf pros when he played charvels and the early jems and now evo's and breeds.

What Ed said, probably some of the X2, the SD, and early PAF Pros the above on that disc, I'm guessing he had an assortment of guitars that he used...

Which is actually the truth- diMarzio would send Joe a pup, and he'd then say 'needs more/less whatever' they'd send another, and to keep them all straight Joe started naming them after the Flintstones characters.

on the crossroads duel scene he had that jack butler charvel loaded with two paf pro's and a carvin x100b amp! sounded real good!

I've had a few, I've decided I like the old ones best. I had one of the new white ones years ago but it screamed "VAI" way too loud....

The RB in the pic has a Fred and a PAF Pro in it. I had Evos in it but the bridge was too bright in in it. I like the Pros, the Fred is very similar with just little more mids. I still have the original pink ones put away, but I like the black better. Guess I'm just not secure enough in my manhood :eyecrazy:

I had a Jem for a while. Not a bad guitar but I sold it to get a strat.
actually Bam-Bam would be awesome name for the right pickup!

As much as i admire that posterior there is a time and place for everything and the pickup lounge just seems like an inappropriate place for it.
