Iread a while ago that the Alnic VIII was as close you could get to a ceramic while still being alnico.

Re: anyone know about alnico 8 magnets?

I read somewhere AVIII is more or less the same thing as Ceramics, but using Ceramics is cheaper.

Wolftone used to use Alnico 8 magents in some pickups. He now uses Alnico 2 and 5. I guess Alnico 8 was a bit over-the-top...

I emailed him shortly after he stopped making those, and his response was he stopped making them because it was cost prohibitive. He had to buy $1000 worth of the magnets at a shot (I think). Lynn Collins, his mentor, still makes a8 pickups. Now if only I could get ahold of him...

actually i heard a few minutes ago from a pup maker
that the 8 is under a ceramic and a bit over the 5's in tone?
so dead in the middle of those two i suppose right?

Re: anyone know about alnico 8 magnets?

I don't know about dead in the middle. There's still alnico VI and VII. I have a set of Alnico VI lipsticks in my Danelectro that sound good. They're very clean and clear.

oh yeah forgot about those(6 and 7)
so we can safely say it is right under ceramic then?
man i bet it would KILL in my custom :scratchch

Re: anyone know about alnico 8 magnets?

I know that the larger ceramic mag from a DD (or similar) kills all in my Custom. You should give it a go. ;)

Re: anyone know about alnico 8 magnets?

here is what one major pup maker said about alnico 8

" the Alnico 8 is very bright, but not "harsh." The high end seemed to be more "violiny" sounding. They were very touch sensitive, as well, and had a tendency to feed back more than the A-5's because the magnet is so sensitive.
I'd place Alnico 8 between Alnico 5 and Ceramic. "

I agree with this especially the "violiny" part!!! :32:

the lead tone is VERY VIOLIN LIKE!

Re: anyone know about alnico 8 magnets?

I'll give Allstar Magnetics a call, and about 6 and 7 too -- unless somebody in here has already tried that...

Re: anyone know about alnico 8 magnets?

A8 mags are $6 ea (10 pcs) and will take 35 days to get here. Anybody else interested? Anybody else already place an order?

Re: anyone know about alnico 8 magnets?

From what company can you get those alnico 3 , 4 , 6 , 7 and 8 ?
If i try the custom again it will be with alnico 3 or 4 to cool it down , have more mids , less bass and highs . ( i tried cearamic and alnico5 )
I am not sure alnico 8 or more than 5 will do this job .
