Anyone know of mods for Peavey Classic 20?

I have a classic 20 - very very middy, tweedy. Too much for my tastes. My bad back loves the weight, though, and it sounds better, but not quite there in a Legacy 1 x 12 in the local guitar shop (which should have Celestion vintage 30 in there). If I could modify the tone stack to get some of those mids out, I'd be a lot happier!

Thanks....

i don't know if this will help, but when i got my c20 i replaced the tubes with jjs and put in a fender bassman speaker -- sounded much bettter -- and then i replaced the tube in V1 with a vintage RCA 5751, and that was better still :smokin:

I actualy turn the mids up on mine... :)

Although the tone controls on the C20 don't have a great affect in comparison with other amps if you boost the highs and the bass and turn off the mids you can really feel it... if that's no enough, maybe a new speaker?

I'd replace the speaker with a Celestion Vintage 30. Lew

First off, whenever Lew posts, I listen. Try his recommendations.

Now I can't vouch for the 20 (I also confess I thought they only made a 30 on the lower power end) but I love my Classic 50 4x10 and Classic 50 2x12 "Gr8Scott". It's only a matter of twiddling the knobs to get any sound I might want in my post-metal days.

If the 20 doesn't work out for you, sincerely let me know via PM before you put her up on the Trading Post.

If I want to sell it, I'll give you a PM first!

Did this help with the boxy, low-mid dominated tone?

i don't think the tube replacement made much difference to the tone per se -- that was more of a smoothing out of the overdrive sound -- it is a pretty middy amp, and when i put in the bassman speaker it remained fairly middy, but to my ear, quite nice -- not at all boxy, and with a lot of punch -- the speaker it came with was just awful, sounded like glass breaking, so i changed it as soon as i could -- i don't know if it was a blue marvel, since it didn't have a label, but whatever it was it had to go -- anyway, i would think that a change to an alnico speaker, specifically one that's voiced brighter, would help a lot -- try the speaker forum at weber speakers -- you can ask ted weber and he'll tell you which of his speakers he thinks would be best -- people seem to think his advice is pretty good on these matters -- and i'd be interested in hearing how it works out :smokin:

Thanks to everyone here. Not sure if I am going to mod it, or just move up to a classic 30 or Traynor YCV 20.

You might check out this site:

Steve has a series of articles on the mods that he did to a Classic 30 and you might find something interesting.

The Classic 20 seems to have the same preamp circuit as the Classic 30 so most of the mods should transfer over pretty easily.

for those of us who are electrically-challenged, is there anybody who will do the blue guitar mods for you?
