You should get a neck through neck from Carvin, get it in front of you, lay it on some butcher paper and draw something that looks good to you. Nothing's wrong, as long as you can play it.

In guitar-building, there is really only one rule that I think EVERYONE should follow:

Do it right. If it isn't worth doing right, don't do it at all. Don't cheap out on templates (or anything for that matter), especially if you're routing for a Floyd Rose.

Why not cheap out on buying premade templates? I'd rather do it myself anyway. It allows me to customise what I need and also allows me to have control of the materials used. And it's cheaper.

As for the template, I might have one for a 7 string.... What style are you looking at? General super strat or some other fancy stuff?
7 string FR rout, you just extend a 6 string slightly and add it to the existing design.

Cheaping out on templates will cost you more in labor time than you will save on materials. Getting a smooth, continuous curve and perfectly square edge all the way around a body takes a lot of time, and it is actually quite difficult to freehand it with perfect results. You could spend half a day or longer doing what you can do in half an hour with a template and a router...and on top of it, you'll likely get better results with the router. If you have the tools needed to make guitar, you've already invested thousands of dollars. What is $15 in shipping to you?

I say this because I've done it both ways. IMO, the only time to shape a body entirely by hand is with an original design (which is why I did it by hand the times that I did).

I've been making guitars of late, and there's nothing like the difference between a good template and a bad one, and even more to freehanding it, or having to 'guess' how much extra to add.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about a self-printed template, not a physical ready-made. OP did say he wanted to save a couple of bucks by printing instead of paying shipping costs. I can imagine his printer is set up to not print anything in actual size, because it saves paper.

None of my measuring devices have a "little bit" mark on them. You get one chance to drill for OFR posts.

I don't recommend converting 6 to 7 by simply expanding any 6-string design towards the extra string. You'll come out better by expanding equally in both directions, especially in the body design.

Re: Anyone know where I can find a template for a...

Ok just to clarify, I get my templates printed out at the local cad and copy (A0 or A1 size) paste them to some 16mm mdf and shape it myself. I can make the curves and straight edges pretty much perfect. I think a lot of guys underestimate what they can actually do themselves given the right tools and equipment... That's why warmoth is still around :D (jokes! Not really...)
I've hand made all of my templates and, save for 1 where there was an actual printing error, they've all been perfect (or damn near as close to it as they'll ever be)

The cheaping out part was that I do not buy my templates pre made. I still utilise templates, even for unique designs.

As for extending the FR temp, I assume the 7 string FR is just longer in 1 dimension than the 6 string, hence the ease of modifying the template.

Well... all you really need is the template for the Floyd Rose route, and the distance to the neck pocket. After that, you can freehand your body design before you do your cutting, and it'll fit on a sheet of legal paper. Glue it to your masonite/MDF for making your body template, and go wild.

For the carvin neck can I get one for a Floyd? For neck thru?

I dunno.
EDIT: nope. gotta route it yourself.

Just guesstimate what size hole you need and give it another 1/4-1/2in. (shrug)

By the way, my first answer was more about guitar shape than routes. I was assuming you'd use a template for that, since it's pretty important. Just cutting a hole would probably work though too.

Jesus, don't listen to me.

Re: Anyone know where I can find a template for a...

If you're doing a neck-thru: For the love of God just use a template and do it right! You only have one shot to get everything right if it is neck-thru. Why risk wasting all the money, materials, and time invested in the entire project only to be completely ruined because you didn't want to spend $15-$30? If you want a 7-string Floyd Rose, you're going to have to spend money on a decent template for it to work at all.

AS Itsabass said, if you already have the THOUSANDS of dollars worth of tools to use standard methods of guitar-building, what is a few bucks on templates going to do? Here's a checklist of materials to have:

- Table saw
- Radial arm saw or miter box
- Joiner
- Thickness planer or thickness sander
- Large band saw
- Router with an assortment of straight bits and shaper bits
- Spindle sander
- A LOT of bar clamps
- Decent wood-glue (I recommend Titebond)
- A LOT of sand paper; at least grits 80-220, and that is only if you want to stain the wood and have a satin finish. You'll need to go up to much higher grits with any other finish.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, you'll need patience, knowledge of what you're doing, planning, measure-twice-cut-once, and SAFETY. You're not much of a guitar player without your fingers (unless you're Tony Iommi or Django Reinhardt).

Re: Anyone know where I can find a template for a...

epi, I have a CAD file for an Ibanez K7 7 string with a FR but i only have the front view... I don't have the rear spring cavity template but I would thing that's easy to work out from a standard strat cavity?

Re: Anyone know where I can find a template for a...

The other question is: are you building the neck yourself, or buying it? Important question, as it dictates the neck pocket dimensions...

Re: Anyone know where I can find a template for a...

The few pics I've found on ebay for a 7-string Floyd has the same spring claw with it, so it'd just be a matter of making sure the cavities are in correct position. The tremolo block will be wider, mind you...

The bridge post spacing and recessed route will be different from a normal Floyd Rose.

Of course. I was responding in particular to the question of the spring cavity.
