What was it about the amp that was not perfect?

I'm in Sacramento today. I'm about to hook up with a guy that is selling a Black Cat on Harmony Central. Good price on it. So, I'll get to really try it out and crank it up at his house.

Reports to follow... I hope he has guitars besides strats. !!!

Some have reverb and some don't, as you probably know.
It's Mark Sampson's updated version of his Matchless DC-30.
He started both those companies. How much? What color?

It's got reverb, but it's red sparkle and silver. I'm going to have to see it before I trash the color. 2x12 for $19XX.

nothing is perfect to my ears. lol. but, i dont really know what it was, maybe it way to "nice" sounding, so to speak. me, i like something that sounds a little "rough". many people, and scott most likely, will love this amp, to me, just wasnt what i was looking for.

Well, I played one tonight... non reverb (I could have sworn the guy told me reverb), but it was pretty cool, but it didn't just grab me by the nads.

Keep looking I guess. Or maybe I need to try the Black Cat Reverb.

Yeah, Red Sparkle doesn't suit a great number of players.
At least you could hear it, to make a determination before
buying it.

I love these types of amps, but Xerxes does have a point.
They are a certain tone that's suitable for a lot of styles, but not
all. A lot of guys want a boutique, but then realize that they aren't really gainy amps. A lot of used boutiques you see out there are from guys that realized a $3000 sound may not be
"their sound."

I think you're right-there's an illusion that high cash=high quality tone, that is if one is good enough to draw it out of the guitar, amp and hands. I'm not one who is lucky enough to have "it." Sorta like Joe Barden pups, great if you're great, but they'll be very revealling of small mistakes. With low gain amps, there's not much to hide behind.

I'd love to have a Bad Cat or Matchless, etc., but in the end...

I've got a friend that is going to try to take me over to the Bad Cat factory next week. If it works out, I'm going to get to try out the new Hot Cat reverb (much improved features) the new Trem Cat (looks like an AC 30 clone with trem and verb), plus the old style HC, the Black Cat Reverb and all the rest.

I'm stoked. I hope it works out. My biggest problem is that I need to quit looking at ebay because I'm going to end up buying something.

and, in the back of my mind, the vox AC30 Hand wired is lurking. I've found a dealer that will sell me a 2x12 combo for way less than any others. Very tempting because I've played that amp and I really liked it.

Tough call and the money is burning a hole in my pocket.

There could be worst quandaries to have!

If it's an AC-30 sound you're looking for....and you really liked the AC-30 you played.....and you can get a good deal on the AC-30....I say get the AC-30 ! :D

I'm a big D@MN help, aren't I ???!!!!

The BadCat amps are very sweet. A local shop not too far from Charlotte has a few in stock. They can make a Les Paul sing!

That new hot cat reverb and the trem cat look really sweet. I"ll be playing both next week!

That is always a tough predicament. Spend wisely, my friend. Tone you shall find.
