Anyone Play Electric Violin?

I once saw a guy play an electric violin on TV... he had it connected to a bunch of effects pedals like phaser, chorus, delay, etc and he was producing some really funky cool sounds!

So, does anyone here play, or know anyone that does? Could you use guitar effect pedals and create some really weird sounds?

How hard is it to convert to violin after guitar? I actually had lessons as a kid, but then stopped.... I imagine that it would be quite easy with my guitar knowledge to find notes and things on the violin, and I would have a feel for it... no?

I know a chick who plays in a band, and she plays electric violin. They mostly do metallica, and she solos, using a wah, distortion, all sorts of effects, runs it through a plexi.

Listen to 1972-1974 era King Crimson, or Mahavishnu Orchestra...they were doing this in the early 70s.

I play violin, but don't own an electric. I can tell you its not an easy endevor. Its basically like a fretless guitar/bass. The feel, well im my opinions violin is much more diffuclt, you have to have a better "feel". Even though the fret board is not as vast, getting a good quality sound relies on your fingers alot more then it does guitar. Electric violins are alot more "forgiving" its easier to create better sound then acoustics.

Yes if you have a electric violin you can run though those effects, it has the 1/4" jack for an amp. Ive tried it before with my friend's. In fact, you cah run anything with a 1/4" Jack though guitar effects. Done it with my keyborad.

I don't play violin, but I do play mandolin and it has the same tuning. I've run that silly thing through every effect I own. It's interesting sometimes, mostly annoying. Just ask my wife! Anyway, as far as violin goes, listen to Mahavishnu Orchestra or Jon Luc Ponti from the 80's. THERE was a wild man!

I remember when Mark Wood became popular in the '80s playing electric violin. It was pretty cool stuff. More recently, I went to a Jim Brickman concert and he had a violinist name Tracy Silverman who played a 6-string, fretted electic violin. Very good musician. He did a solo in which he incorporated all kinds of effects. He had a distortion pedal, a loop sampler to play leads over, chorus, flange, wah etc.. Pretty amazing to watch.
