anyone play the new big Marshall?

Re: anyone play the new big Marshall?

the vintage moderns seem really neat but i'm not quite sure that they're classifying as "vintage" and "modern" does it just change from a tube pre to a SS? or maybe changes from tube recto to diode?

Re: anyone play the new big Marshall?

Is this the same JVM that there has been all the rave about?

To put it in the simplest description.
It kicks some serious ass.
4 channels, all with eq and all that shit, foot switchable, It does everything you could ever want and everything sounds good on it. Its an audio miracle.

Re: anyone play the new big Marshall?

I've heard some clips on youtube. Not the very best quality though. I hope the thing isn't that bloody noisy!

Re: anyone play the new big Marshall?

I haven't had the chance to test one, but every review I've read gives nothing but praise. Also, from what I've read and heard, the Vintage Modern is a good concept that didn't quite turn out so well...

Re: anyone play the new big Marshall?

I've got a JVM and I really like it so far. Tonight is the first gig test though.....I'll let you know how it works out. Sounds great in the basement!!

Re: anyone play the new big Marshall?

I think everyone assumed the Vintage Modern would sound better than the JVM, but IMO it's not the case. There's really nothing I like about the Vintage Modern......not the tone, the tolex, the tubes, or anything.

However, I played the JVM for an hour one day, running it through all it's paces, and I really like it. I think it's one of the very best modern Marshalls, if not THE best. It's a mass produced amp, so I can tell it needs to be babied though.....just because of the cheaper pots, FX, and board mounted tubes. But as an overall amp, the thing sounds really good, even the clean channel. Even though it's 100W, it's easily tamed, and not nearly as loud as older 100 watters. I think Marshall has a winner with that amp......finally.

Well it sounded great with my strat and the jb jr. in the bridge....but just ok with my Les Paul for some reason. I spend most of my time on the crunch channel as the OD1 and OD2 have really too much gain for me. So I like my Egnater designed single channel amp I built at his clinic in November just as much. THe JVM is super versatile but a bit overkill for me right now. Figured I'd give it a try though. I'll probably put it up in the trading post, so anyone looking for a basically mint, gigged once JVM, here is your chance!

Re: anyone play the new big Marshall?

There is nothing on the JVM I would throw away and not one tone I couldn't use. It's a GREAT amplifier, a great clean sound, amazing crunch and STUNNING high gain. It sounded a little smoother than a JCM800 I felt (but it was at very low volume, it could have been it). And yes, the uber gain channels are noisy, but not much more so than most other amps or a pedal.

100% worth the money. Quality sounds throughout and great features.

Re: anyone play the new big Marshall?

The only thing i would do is change the pots? Carry an extra for the road? They are defiantly gonna be less durable with all the extra electronics in there. But daymn they sound good.

Re: anyone play the new big Marshall?

the JVM sounds godly, could barely get it to do a sound that didnt rock. My only issue is again: the pots. a couple felt a little loose and it seems like a nice hard impact would just snap a few knobs right off. The Vintage Modern is actually a pretty smokin amp. It takes some getting used to to dial in sounds, but once you do it absolutely screams, especially with a Paul. The JVM is actually almost easier to use even though it is so complex electronically, and gets lots of awesome sounds but the Vintage Modern feels like you could toss it around a lot more without as much worry. It really depends what your looking for, i would recommend trying them both

They sound absolutely killer together, Great compliments with hollow body guitars, That was some jam we had at grassroots.

Re: anyone play the new big Marshall?

I thought the vintage modern sounded best with that awesome super-heavy epiphone paul with the aftermarket gibson pups and the TREX mudhoney OD pedal. That was some awesome screaming solo tone.
