They're alright. i owned the 1x12 combo paid $279.00 for it. Pretty good clean sound but might not be vintage enough for you tone wise.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

I tried 2X12 combo and was fairly impressed with the tone. The salesperson at GC was uber-annoying though. I would buy one. It's got good clean and crunch to it.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

They are a decent amp for a good price. If you can messure tone on a 1 to 10 scale, I would give it a 6.5 to 7. You would need to spend a lot more to climb up that scale to 9s and 10s.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

I tried out the ValveKing 112 (or 212) combo this past week-end at Sam Ash using an ESP/LTD EC-400vf with JB/59. I really liked the amp for high-gain stuff, i.e. hard rock/metal, but I found that when I turned the gain low I really didn't get a great classic rock / southern rock tone you want. Of course, at a very low volume I wasn't pushing the tubes either.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

Great cheap amps...could easily live with one of those.
Great amp for the money, the only better value is Laney AOR, I'v got mine for $400 and its made in UK vs. CHina, but other wise I loved and almost bought before Laney deal poped up. You can also buy it and send to Vodoo Amp mods, and for under a grand you will an amp that will eat most brand name stock models for lunch.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

I have the Valveking head, into a 4x12, and I have no doubt it'll do everything you want it to. I've been really impressed with mine since picking it up this past winter. Between two channels, two inputs, and a class A to A/B switch, you should be able to get nearly every tone from it. Check it out in a store first if you get the chance.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

It sounds kind of like a solidstate to me. Not as expressive or responsive as most tube amps i've played, i don't know why that would be tho.

I think for southern rock you'd be happier with something more vintage style. The ValveKing's gain channel is totally aimed at drop-tuned Nu-Metal buzzsaw kids, not very crunchy or raunchy like a good rockin tone.

what kinda prices are silverface Fenders goin for these days? Kinda hard to beat a 70's fender for country / rock tones...

There are two inputs (1 is 10db higher than 2) and the A to A/B dial makes a huge difference in getting a more classic sound. With the gain on 4-6, it'll do quite nicely. I don't get any of that buzz saw garbage out of mine at all.

Hey Jay.. Is the amp pretty friendly on pedals and is it quiet or would i need to invest in a noise gate. I jsut hate listening to clips on youtube. I am looking for a good amp for a good price and my first step into the tube territory and getting away from the ss amps and digital processors.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

Yep, pedals work pretty well, and I have no noise issues with mine. It's the first tube amp I've actually owned, after rehearsing with various ones for years and it's quite good for the price. I've played everything from country to metal and it's done a nice job. If I had 600-800 dollars more I may have bought a Marshall DSL as that's what I rehearse with, but the Valveking is just so versatile that it's tough to beat, even when compared to amps much more expensive than it. I have yet to haul it around town for gigs so I can't comment on the reliability just yet, but so far so good. I really like it, and don't plan on changing any time soon.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

Thanks for the insight.. Do you have any sound clips or anything of that nature with you amp and effects.. I am partial to Peavey since I am from Mississippi and like I said this will be my first tube amp. I have a bottom 4x12 cab with celestion 70/80 speakers but may get that peavey cab later. I am just wanting to get away from processors and wanna get a signature sound from my guitar and amp and a few pedals and not some computer chip.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

Sorry man, I don't have any recordings with this amp just yet. No need getting a Peavey cab either, as yours will be just fine. Best thing to do if you get the amp is really take some time to get to know it, and work with every knob and control you can. Once the sound is close to what you want (if not there), then maybe look to changing speakers in the cab.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

Thanks man.. I appreciate the insight and info on the amp. I will run by a local shop and try it out.. I think I will like it..

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

Chances are you will. It's very good for an amp in that price range, and even higher. Just go with what suits your tastes the best. All the best.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

I played one in Sam Ash a few weeks ago. It looks great on paper, but it was really flat, dead-sounding and picked up a lot of hum from the overhead flourescents (much more so than the other amps I tried). I would rather have played a Spider III (gah! okay, not really.). So I'm looking into one of those Randall MTS dealios with the removable preamps sections instead.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

+1 on all above from Jay.. great little amp for the bucks
I've got 112 and love it

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

I know you didn't ask for amp suggestions, but I think the classic 30 may fit your style better. I thought the valveking combo was ok, but the head seemed better for some reason. I love my classic 30.

That may explain why I was getting mostly hard rock/metal tones (which sounded great) but no good classic rock/southern rock tones when I tried one out this past week-end. I'll have to check it out again and try those options.
