Anyone replaced their pedalboard with an M9?

Re: Anyone replaced their pedalboard with an M9?

I am thinking about doing this, and wondered if it was good times, bad times, or a little of both.

I use an M9 on my board, along with other stuff. The reverbs, modulations, and the boost comp are my personal favorites on the M9. I don't think anything else out there can do the ParticleVerb effect, it's great for synth sounds.

The delays are pretty good. I prefer the control I have over my delays from a DD-20 but I use both (the auto volume swell is nice on the M9).

The dirt models on the M9 are not too good, in my opinion, so I use other boxes for that.

Re: Anyone replaced their pedalboard with an M9?

Good feedback, thank you. I have never used Line 6 for dirt - not because I don't like their drive / dist offerings, just that I haven't tried them.

Maybe I will hold on to my OD and Distortion even if / after I make the jump.

Although the whole point is to just have one thing on the floor.

How is their TS?

I should probably qualify my original response. I don't like the OD models for *live* playing. They actually record pretty well. If you listen to the "Psalterium" album linked in my sig, you'll hear either a Top Hat Ambassador or a Fender HRD running clean with dirt from an M13 for all of the electric parts. I just prefer the standalone dirt boxes I've chosen for playing in a live setting.

That said, the "Screamer" and "Tube Driver" are probably the best offerings. I should also say that my current practice rig here at home is a POD Studio GX and headphones, so I'm quite happily using those same models in this setting. Double standards!

Re: Anyone replaced their pedalboard with an M9?

Is that the big multi-pedal modeler? I haven't tried it, but I did not like the XT Live's limitations of only having certain pedals. If they made a modeler that did a full range of common and uncommon/boutique/vintage pedals, I could see it replacing a multi-pedal board, but if it's just certain "our favorites", then no.

Re: Anyone replaced their pedalboard with an M9?

I have. And I cloned the sounds from my TS7, BYOC Overdrive II, and Bad Monkey on the M9. It replaced my compressor, chorus, delay and looper too. So yeah, I really like it.

Awesome, thank you guys.

For how much I play and where, I think it will be perfect for me. I'm trying to neaten up my basement as my son gets more and more mobile and curious.

Right now I have 90 miles of cables and a pile of pedals that is basically a toddler obstacle course

Also, I meant to put this in the amp room - thanks for finding it and responding, guys

I think you should do it man... it really is a great unit. The modulation, verbs, and delays can be dialed in all nice n pretty like if you give it some time. My buddy runs an MXR Classic OD, Crunchbox, M13 into a slightly hairy AC30 and pulls off some great Circa Surviveish tones. The latest Thrice record was recorded with an M13 for delays, verbs, and compression. I think i recall you saying you liked those bands.

I love both of those bands - Circa Survive more so.

I understand and appreciate this viewpoint.

I have very solid and proven stuff now.

But I love the idea, it just makes sense to me: guitar, processing, amp. 3 pieces of gear.

Also, I am no longer a tone hound - I'm a "learn to play" hound, and I'm just going to go with it because it feels healthy.

I accept effects as a necessity, but I have lost interest in finding the best of each thing. If I'm not playing well, nobody will notice the subtlety if my compression or the timbre of my modulation.

Re: Anyone replaced their pedalboard with an M9?

ya I was contemplating this or other effects units too...such as the Boss where there is an external loop for other pedalz... bottom line is that it all affects your tone in a digital like way - general consensus and from experience as I used to have the bossME30 from 10 yrs ago... if ur hittin wrong notes tho it does not matter how much awesome gear there is, none of it will save u!!! ;)

Re: Anyone replaced their pedalboard with an M9?

Wait a minute! You mean if I buy everything approved by TGP, it WON'T make me play like *insert famous guitarist here*?!?

DAM IT!

You joke, but that's pretty much the realization I had

Re: Anyone replaced their pedalboard with an M9?

Everyone saying "oh no it affects your tone in a digital way" is presumably most often hearing the recorded tones they think are the absolute best ever from either a CD or an mp3. Food for thought.

Re: Anyone replaced their pedalboard with an M9?

also I have never heard a digital modeler sound anything like my black arts pharaoh (muff variant) nor like my ratII proco. never heard a modeler sound like any type of fuzz pedal at all!!! not even axefxII...

I have no use for most effects, and I really dont like the line 6 wah compared to my jerry cantrell wah. I doubt their gate is as good as my decimator g string, but its safe to say it is pretty good.

also, my line 6 stuff died and I hate the line 6 service - just said it is impossible to fix, we wont allow you to use the software you paid for, so just spend $100s on new line 6 stuff (see my thread in the AMP FORUM ;) )

I don't think you'll hear any of us disagree that 9 times out of 10, the real thing is going to sound better than it's modeled agent. It's just not necessary for most of our practical uses. I could spend thousands on amps and pedals, tweaking everything just right, but if I'm jamming out to stuffed animals and pissing my neighbors off, it's kind of a waste of money IMO.

I have good amps and some nice pedals, so I'm not saying that it's absolute, but you have to find a limit within what is realistic to you.

Re: Anyone replaced their pedalboard with an M9?

I'm not worried about it "sounding digital."

I am all good with the way Line 6 effects sound.

I was more worried about any practical issues I may not be considering like only being able to turn on 3 at a time, why that might be bad, etc.
