Anyone rockin' a Fender Bass VI?

With the currents runs of Classic Series, Pawn Shop, and Vintage Modified, I was wondering if anyone has one of these and how they're using it? Tic-tac bass, baritone guitar, or as a normal bass?

Re: Anyone rockin' a Fender Bass VI?

I overcame my GAS for these things.

A friend of mine bought a Squier VM. Then, another. Then, a Burns Barracuda. Then, a second one of those. He (wisely) treats these instruments as baritone guitars rather than basses.

Think of them as down-tuned Jaguars.

Re: Anyone rockin' a Fender Bass VI?

Just tried one at GC. It was a Squier with 3 singles and a bunch of switches. The bridge was derped somehow but that really didn't matter as it was practically useless as either a bass or guitar. No thankya.

Re: Anyone rockin' a Fender Bass VI?

A friend used to own a MIJ Bass VI and it was amazing…. I've red in multiple forums and reviews that the Squier model, though rotten as hell straight outta the box, once tuned-up (and somehow re-installing the bridge upside down)and strung correctly is an amazing machine ….. I have modified my Northern tele custom to be played as a baritone, but I'm dying for a bass VI...

Re: Anyone rockin' a Fender Bass VI?

No appeal what-so-ever. I can live a full and satisfied life with 4 strings.

Re: Anyone rockin' a Fender Bass VI?

A friend of mine purchased the Squier, and his biggest annoyance with it is the butter-soft nut... other'n that, he's happy.

Re: Anyone rockin' a Fender Bass VI?

I picked up one of those Pawn Shop versions on a GC blowout, but I would not say I am rocking it as much as hacking away on it. :D

Re: Anyone rockin' a Fender Bass VI?

It's a little weird calling it a "bass". I would never use it on stage, but it might be useful for plinking and songwriting.

If I was going to go for a short scale bass, I'd rather build one with a Warmoth body and neck. Then I would be confident there's no wonky nut, neck, bridge, or anything else.

Re: Anyone rockin' a Fender Bass VI?

I use as a Bass. And i play rock and blues. I modified mine bass vi with SJAG-3n (Neck), SJAG-2n (Middle), SJAG-3b (Bridge) and a Fender Mute.

Re: Anyone rockin' a Fender Bass VI?

IMO, the Duncan SJAG pickups are a distinct improvement over the stock ones. Unfortunately, the music that you have chosen to include in your video demos is more in the realm of baritone guitar and "tic-tac" bass than anything with a truly profound low end.

On many legendary recordings of the Fifties and Sixties, it was common practice to have a Fender VI or a Danelectro play the bass part one octave above a contrabass or a Fender Precision.

The other classic application of an instrument such as yours was film and television incidental music. The Bass VI has been lumbered with this association almost as much as the Fender Jaguar is with Surf music and Spaghetti Western soundtracks.

I struggle to recall the name of anyone who uses a Bass VI or a Dano to play da Funk. Perhaps, Reggie might know? :scratchch
