Anyone still dig the Blues Jr.?

Re: Anyone still dig the Blues Jr.?

I have the tweed one with the Jensen speaker. I f*cking hate it. Sounds thin, spikey, muddy, and cardboardy. Then, I tried my friend's BJ with the original speaker; it blew mine away. I replaced the tubes with some Mullard EL84s, and the power tube distortion got SOOO much better. The disgusting speaker "beam of 500k midrange" tone is still there though. Thinking about putting a C Rex in there or something...

Re: Anyone still dig the Blues Jr.?

I'm sorry I hate those current production Jensens, you will be much happier with a C Rex. It smoothes out that spikey character.

I find that smoother/darker tubes like JJ or Mullards work best in that amp as far as current production tubes are concerned.

Re: Anyone still dig the Blues Jr.?

i dont care for the current jensen offerings either and i do like the jj el84 in there. ive never tried a rex in my blues jr but love it in my deluxe reverb.

Re: Anyone still dig the Blues Jr.?

So, which incarnation of Blues Jr and speakers is the best?

The III's have a nicer jewel lamp, and a few different speaker options...laquered tweed, Red October, and a few other ltd runs.

If someone wanted the best Blues Jr........would it be something like the new III version with a Cannabis Rex? What's the best stock speaker that ever came in one?

Re: Anyone still dig the Blues Jr.?

Still love mine. It has a C.REx and a maple cab. No circuit mods other than moving the verb return pre-master. And I do circuit mods for a living. Doesn't need them.

Re: Anyone still dig the Blues Jr.?

Glad to see this thread's still around.

The Blues Jr. is still the best entree to tubedom for most budget-minded guitarists with a Fenderish bent. I just wish Fender hadn't been in such a damn hurry when it designed the thing.

Re: Anyone still dig the Blues Jr.?

I bought my Blues Jr back in '95, so it's one of the very first green boards.

Only mods I made was changing the insertion point of the reverb, and cooled the bias down into the operating parameters of an EL84. These mods made it much more reliable and a little more vesatile.

I just went through it a month ago resoldering tube sockets, checking voltages, and tightened everything up. This is only the second time I've had to do this in 17 years.

I think stock speaker works great, and only gets better with time!!!
